Yantis v-ball team begins season


The Yantis varsity volleyball team has rolled to an early 4-5 season record. The Lady Owls will travel to Sulphur Bluff Friday, a team which has beaten them three times in the young season in close matches.

The team has defeated Clarksville, Rivercrest JV two times and Roxton. In the Roxton Tournament, the Lady Owls defeated Clarksville 25-17, 25-20. Yantis was led by Montana Wetzel’s five kills, three aces, three blocks and six digs. Ashton Burnett had three aces, two kills, seven assists and 12 digs; Sidne Romine four aces, six assists and seven digs and Sarah Wilkey with two aces, three kills, one assist and one block.

In their first win over Rivercrest JV the Lady Owls won 18-25, 25-20, 15-10. Burnett led with 17 digs, seven six kills and one ace; Romine four aces, two kills, six assists and nine digs; Wetzel four aces five kills, one assist, six digs and six blocks; Maddie Hooker four aces, three kills, seven digs and two blocks; Sydney Williams two aces, one kill, two assists, eight digs and five blocks and Wilkey two kills, one assist, eight digs and five blocks.

The Lady Owls started the season with three set loss to Dodd City by the scores of 13-25, 16-25-16-25. The Lady Owls only senior, Jackie Lopez, and Hope Dixon each hustled her way to 14 digs in the match. Wetzel also had 14 digs along with five kills four tips, and three assists; Burnett had three aces, three kills, seven assists and an outstanding 20 digs.

“As long as our girls will play as a team, we will win games. I am looking for all the girls to be leaders because they each have different things to bring to the team,” Coach Jamie Garcia said. “I also look to Jackie Lopez because she is our only senior.”

The Lady Owls will travel to Sulphur Bluff Friday for a varsity match at 4:30 p.m.
