Panthers go 1-5 in hoops action

The Bullard Panther varsity basketball team returned to action recently, as the team continued competing at the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, held Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 28-30, at Huntington High School.

In the second round of the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team took on the Woden Eagles.

The Eagles soared to a strong offensive start in the contest against the Panthers, as Woden started hot with a total of 21 points in the first quarter, compared to Bullard’s 13 points of first quarter offense.

In the second quarter, Woden continued to find success offensively, adding to their total on the scoreboard, as the Eagles outscored the Panthers, 11-4, allowing Woden to hold a 32-17 lead over Bullard at the halftime break.

After the two teams made their way back onto the court for the second half of play, Bullard began attempting to mount a comeback rally in the third quarter. The Panthers were able to hit for a total of 12 points, while the Eagles amassed eight points.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers continued to prowl their way past the Eagles thanks to Bullard outscoring Woden, 16-11. However, the second half comeback attempt by the Panthers fell just short of completion, as the Eagles claimed the victory over the Panthers, 51-45.

The Panthers’ offensive efforts were led by the strong performance of senior shooting guard Jerrod Shrode, with 11 points in the contest against the Eagles.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Woden included junior center Dustin Dover, with 10 points; senior point guard Will McCowin, with six points; senior small forward Evan Hodges, with six points; senior shooting guard Chase Chewning, with five points; junior small forward CJ Gardner, with five points; and sophomore point guard Harrison Meador, with two points.

In the third contest at the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team battled against the Pineywoods Community Academy Timberwolves.

The Panthers and the Timberwolves began the contest with a strong showing of offensive efforts in the first quarter of play, as PCA netted a total of 19 points, while Bullard compiled an 11-point opening quarter performance.

In the second quarter, the Panthers attacked at every offensive opportunity made available to them, as Bullard outscored PCA, 15-14. At the halftime intermission, the two teams headed for their respective locker rooms with PCA holding a 33-26 lead over Bullard.

After resuming the contest in the second half of play, the Timberwolves came out of the locker room hungry for offensive success, as PCA’s offense found its groove, hitting for 22 points in the third quarter of play, compared to Bullard’s nine points of offense.

In the fourth quarter, the offensive fires for the Panthers burned brightly, as the squad from Bullard attempted to move back into contention by outscoring PCA, 20-14. Despite their best efforts, the Panthers’ comeback rally was not successful, as the Timberwolves collected the win over the Panthers, 69-57.

Dover served as the Panthers’ leading in scoring in the contest against the Timberwolves, collecting a total of 20 points in the matchup.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against PCA included Hodges, with 11 points; Chewning, with seven points; Shrode, with six points, including two three-pointers; Gardner, with five points; Meador, with four points; and senior shooting guard Cody Wright, with three points.

In the fourth round of the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team was matched up against the Buna Cougars.

To begin the catfight affair, the Panthers quickly prowled ahead of their opponent thanks to a strong offensive showing, scoring a total of 14 points in the first quarter, compared to the Cougars’ eight points of opening quarter offensive production.

In the second quarter, Bullard continued to locate several opportunities for offensive success against the Buna defense, as the Panthers outscored the Cougars, 15-10, en route to taking a 29-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After both teams made their way back to the hardwood for the second half of the contest, both Bullard and Buna came out scratching and clawing at each other with strong offensive play in the third quarter. The Panthers remained the top cats thanks to their efforts, netting a total of 17 points, while the Cougars added 16 points to their total.

In the fourth quarter, Buna seemed to attempt a fourth quarter rally in an effort to overcome Bullard, but the push was not strong enough. Although the Cougars outscored the Panthers, 14-12, in the final frame, Bullard held on to its earlier lead and claimed the win over Buna, 57-48.

The Panthers leader in scoring during the contest against the Cougars was Dover, scoring a total of 25 points in the contest.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Buna included Hodges, with 12 points; Shrode, with 11 points, including three three-pointers; Gardner, with four points; senior shooting guard Jagger Haynie, with two points; Chewning, with two points; and McCowin, with two points.

Bullard Panthers 53, Aldine Mustangs 54, FINAL

In the fourth contest at the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team was pitted against their first round opponent, the Aldine Mustangs.

The Mustangs galloped their way past the Panthers with a strong offensive run in the first quarter of the contest, as Aldine collected a total of 17 points, while Bullard scored six points to begin the game.

In the second quarter, Aldine continued to hold the advantage offensively against the Bullard squad, as the Mustangs’ offense outscored the Panthers, 18-13, allowing Aldine to take a 35-19 lead over Bullard at halftime.

Once the contest resumed after the intermission, the Panthers found their offensive footing and prowled ahead in the third quarter of play, as Bullard’s offensive efforts netted the team a total of 11 points, while the team’s defensive labors were rewarded, limiting Aldine to just four points.

In the fourth quarter, Bullard continued to prowl ahead, continuing the team’s strong offensive run and putting Aldine’s previous lead in jeopardy. The Panthers were able to outscore the Mustangs, 23-15 in the final frame, but fell just one point shy of forcing the game into overtime, as the Mustangs defeated the Panthers, 54-53.

Despite coming up short, the Panthers’ offensive leader in the contest against the Mustangs was McCowin, collecting a total of 26 points in the game.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Aldine included Dover, with 11 points; Shrode, with eight points, including two three-pointers; junior shooting guard Hayden Wells, with four points; Hodges, with three points; Chewning, with two points; and Wright, with two points.

After taking home a 1-4 record at the Intergra 2017 Winter Classic, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team returned home to Bullard High School’s Panther Gymnasium for a non-district matchup against the visiting Lindale Eagles Tuesday, Jan. 2.

In the first quarter of play, the Panthers and the Eagles were both able to start the matchup with a solid offensive push, as both teams collected a total of 16 points.

Bullard and Lindale continued to battle for any room offensively against each other in the second quarter of play, but yet again drew a stalemate, as both teams netted 12 points. At the halftime intermission, the teams headed for the locker rooms tied, 28-28.

After the two teams returned to the court for the second half of basketball play, the Eagles soared higher than the Panthers offensively in the third quarter of play, as Lindale scored a total of 15 points, compared to 10 points netted by the Panthers.

In the fourth quarter, Bullard prowled its way past Lindale, as the Panthers outscored the Eagles, 20-19. However, the Panthers were unable to overcome the Eagles’ early lead, as Lindale defeated Bullard, 62-58.

Dover was the leader in scoring for the Panthers in the contest against the Eagles, collecting a total of 18 points.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Lindale included Hodges, with 14 points, including two three-pointers; Gardner, with 11 points; McCowin, with six points; Chewning, with four points; Shrode, with three points; and Wells, with two points.

Bullard Panthers 50, Mabank Panthers 60, FINAL

Wrapping up the first week of the new 2018 year, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team loaded the bus and traveled to take on the Mabank Panthers Friday, Jan. 5, at Mabank High School.

In the first quarter, the home team Mabank and the visiting team Bullard both fought like wild jungle cats, attempting to influence the flow of momentum early to their advantage. Mabank was able to pull slightly ahead in the first frame, scoring a total of 15 points, while Bullard collected 13 points.

Mabank continued to create space on the scoreboard against Bullard in the second quarter of play, as the home team outscored the visitors, 11-9. Going into their respective locker rooms at the halftime break, Mabank held a 26-22 advantage over Bullard.

After returning to the court for the second half of basketball action, both Panther squads came out of the locker room with an offensive hunger. Mabank moved further ahead by putting up a total of 19 points in the third quarter, while Bullard amassed a total of 14 points.

In the fourth quarter, the Bullard team attempted to push bask against Mabank and try to get back into contention in the contest; however, the late prowl by Bullard was snuffed out, as Mabank outscored Bullard, 15-14, en route to claiming the victory in the game, 60-50.

Hodges was the leader for the visiting Bullard team against Mabank, scoring a total of 13 points in the contest.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Mabank included McCowin, with 12 points; Dover, with 10 points; Chewning, with nine points; Shrode, with five points; and Meador, with one point.

With a record of 1-5 in recent games, the Bullard Panther varsity basketball team currently stands with an overall record of 6-16 on the 2017-2018 season.
