Panthers fall short in district matchups against Spring Hill, Kilgore

The Bullard Panther varsity baseball team continued district play last week, as the team loaded the bus and traveled to Longview for a district showdown against the Spring Hill Panthers Wednesday, April 14, at Spring Hill High School. 

After a scoreless first inning of play, both teams were able to light up the scoreboard, as Bullard and Spring Hill each scored one run. 

Spring Hill was able to break the tied ballgame in the fourth inning, using their strong bats to score three runs, as well as an additional run in the fifth inning. 

Not to be outmatched, the visiting Bullard squad fought its way back into contention, plating one run in the sixth inning. Spring Hill answered back at Bullard in their half of the inning, scoring two more runs. 

In the top of the seventh inning, Bullard attempted to mount a comeback rally against Spring Hill, as the team’s bats were able to locate the ball well and allow three runners to cross home plate.

 However, the comeback attempt by Bullard fell short of fruition, as Spring Hill claimed the district victory over Bullard, 7-5.  

Austin Childs was the leader at the plate for Bullard in the district battle against Spring Hill, going 1-4 with two runs batted in. 

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Spring Hill included Jacob Johnson, going 1-3 with one RBI; Jansen Mattingly, going 1-3; Cody Rowan, going 1-3; Cleet Bowman, going 1-4, including a double; and Peyton Miller, going 1-1. 

Josh Chewning was tagged with the loss on the mound for Bullard against Spring Hill, allowing three hits, four runs, and four earned runs, while striking out four and walking five, in 3.2 innings of work. 

A total of two relief pitchers were used for Bullard in the contest, including Denton Ventress and Rowan. Ventress allowed no hits and one run in 1.1 innings, while Rowan allowed one hit, two runs, and one earned run, while striking out one, in one inning of pitching.

After falling short against the Spring Hill Panthers, the Bullard Panther varsity baseball team returned home to Panther Field to host a district contest against the Kilgore Bulldogs Thursday, April 13. 

After a stalemate in the first two innings of the contest, the home team Panthers was able to light up the scoreboard with one run across home plate in the bottom of the third inning. 

Bullard kept the attack of the Bulldogs at bay until the sixth inning of play, when Kilgore was able to score a total of two runs. At the end of regulation, the Bulldogs claimed the district victory in a low-scoring contest, 2-1. 

Mattingly was the strong leader for the Panthers at the plate against the Bulldogs, going 2-4 with one RBI. 

Other significant contributors for the Panthers against the Bulldogs included Rowan, going 1-3; Chewning, going 1-3; and Johnson, going 1-2. 

Colton Bowman was named the losing pitcher for the Panthers in the contest against the Bulldogs, allowing three hits, two runs, and two earned runs, while striking out nine and walking three, in seven innings of work. 

With a 0-2 in district play last week, the Bullard Panther varsity baseball team currently holds an overall record of 7-13-1, 2-5 in district play.
