The Bullard Panther varsity baseball team prowled back into action last week, as the team traveled the short distance to Tyler to take on the Canton Eagles in a one-game playoff in the Area round of the UIL Baseball Playoffs, held Friday, May 12, at Mike Carter Field.

After a two inning stalemate to begin the contest, the Panthers were able to break out the heavy bats and light up the scoreboard first in the Area contest, scoring a total of two runs in the top of the third inning.

However, the Eagles were able to answer the early scoring rally by the Panthers in their half of the fourth inning, collecting a total of two runs to tie the ball game, 2-2.

In the late innings, the Eagles were able to fly ahead of the Panthers after breaking the tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers attempted to rally back in the top of the seventh inning, but were limited to just one run, as a double play was used by the Eagles to claim the victory over the Panthers, 4-3.

Cleet Bowman was the leader at the plate for the Panthers against the Eagles, contributing a 1-4 production, including a double, with two runs batted in.

Other significant contributors for the Panthers against the Eagles included Josh Chewning, going 0-4 with one RBI; Jacob Johnson, going 2-4, including a triple; Peyton Miller, going 1-3; Jansen Mattingly, going 1-3; and Nic Costas, going 1-2.

Colton Bowman was tagged with the loss on the mound for the Panthers against the Eagles, allowing two hits, four runs, and two earned runs, while striking out seven and walking five, in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Johnson saw action as a relief pitcher in the Panthers' final game of the season against the Eagles, allowing one hit and no runs in 1/3 inning.

"This season, I put our team through the toughest strength of schedule that the program has seen in a long time," said Chad Linder, Bullard Panther varsity baseball head coach. "I believe it prepared us to make a run into the playoffs, but we came up a little short. I'm extremely proud of our strong finish and the momentum we have built going into next year. Our team never gave up and pressed on."

With the loss to the Canton Eagles in the Area round of the UIL Baseball Playoffs, the Bullard Panther varsity baseball team finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 12-16-1, 5-5 in district play, and were recognized as Bi-District Champions.
