Local business owner indicted for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child


A local business owner was indicted by a Smith County Grand Jury in December for allegedly committing a sexual assault on a female under 14 years old.

The grand jury returned an indictment on one count of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child against Grant Edward Cook, 56, of Flint, on Thursday, Dec. 7.

Cook is listed as the owner of Grant Cook Music, a store specializing in musical instrument sales and music lessons, located on Highway 155 in Flint.

According to previous reports, the incident allegedly took place in the evening hours of Tuesday, July 4, in the 22100 block of Highway 155 in Flint.

Reports indicate that the suspect’s girlfriend and two grandchildren were at the suspect’s residence for the Fourth of July holiday and spent the night.

After the alleged assault, the victim, identified as under the age of 14 years old, reportedly informed a family member that the suspect had touched her genital area while she was laying on a couch.

Authorities were made aware of the alleged crime on July 9 from the grandmother. The child was then taken to the Child Advocacy Center for a forensic interview.

The incident was later reported to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, resulting in the arrest of the suspect, identified as Grant Edward Cook, 55, of Flint, after a search warrant was issued for his residence and business.

Cook was placed under arrest on Monday, July 17, charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, and booked into the Smith County Jail.

According to Smith County Jail records, bond for Cook was set at $150,000. He was released from the jail on Tuesday, July 18.
