Lady Panthers prowl to district wins vs. CH, SH

Prowling their way back onto the court last week was the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team, continuing their way through the district schedule, as the team hosted a district battle against the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Bullard High School’s Panther Gymnasium.

In the first quarter of play, both the Lady Panthers and Lady Bulldogs traded offensive pushes back-and-forth as the two teams battled for control of the game early. The visiting team Lady Bulldogs grabbed an early edge against the home team Lady Panthers, as Chapel Hill netted a total of 14 points, compared to Bullard’s 13 points of offense in the opening frame.

The Lady Panthers began to push the ball down the court successfully in the second quarter, as Bullard was able to outscore Chapel Hill, 11-8. At the halftime intermission, the two teams headed for their respective locker rooms with the Lady Panthers held a slim 24-22 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.

After returning for the second half of play, the offensive production for the home team Bullard was out in full force during the third quarter of play, as the Lady Panthers pounced on the Lady Bulldogs with a total of 23 points, while limiting Chapel Hill to just five points of scoring.

In the fourth quarter, Bullard continued to find success offensively against Chapel Hill, as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 10-6, en route to claiming the district victory, 57-33.

Leading the prowl for the Lady Panthers in their victory over the Lady Bulldogs was sophomore forward Erin Berry, collecting a total of 21 points in the contest, all coming off of seven made three-pointers.

Other significant contributors Bullard against Chapel Hill included senior center Allie Kirgan, with 16 points; sophomore forward Haley Day, with eight points; junior guard Sydney Foster, with six points; freshman forward Bailey Smith, with two points; sophomore guard Hailey Minton, with two points; and freshman guard Beverly Howard, with two points.

With the victory against the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs to their credit, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team continued in the district schedule last week, this time loading the bus and traveling to take on the Spring Hill Lady Panthers Friday, Jan. 12, at Spring Hill High School.

In the first quarter, the visiting Bullard squad was able to take an early offensive advantage against the home team Spring Hill, as Bullard scored a total of 15 points, compared to Spring Hill’s eight points of offensive production.

Bullard continued to capitalize on offensive opportunities against Spring Hill in the second quarter of play, as Bullard outscored Spring Hill, 11-8. As the teams left the court for the halftime break, Bullard held a 26-16 lead over Spring Hill.

As play resumed in the second half of the district contest in the jungle catfight between Bullard and Spring Hill, the visiting Bullard squad’s offense allowed the team to prowl ahead in the third quarter, netting a total of 20 points, while Spring Hill could only amass a total of five points.

In the fourth quarter, the outcome of the contest had already been decided. Despite Spring Hill outscoring Bullard, 15-13, the early lead by Bullard allowed the team to coast to the district win against Spring Hill, 59-36.

The Lady Panthers of Bullard were led by the accurate shooting of Smith, collecting a total of 26 points in the contest, including seven three-pointers.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Spring Hill included Foster, with 15 points, including two three-pointers; Day, with nine points; Kirgan, with six points; Berry, with two points; and senior center Bailey Baker, with one point.

With a record of 2-0 last week, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team currently holds an overall record of 23-7, 2-1 in district play. The team is currently ranked 16th in the latest poll released by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches on Monday, Jan. 15.

Next week: Tuesday, Jan. 16 – Kilgore at Bullard; Friday, Jan. 19 – Bullard at Gladewater.
