Lady Panthers come up short against Grace, begin district play next week

The Bullard Lady Panther varsity volleyball team prowled their way back onto the hardwood last week, as the team traveled the short distance to Tyler for a non-district bout against the Grace Community Lady Cougars Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Grace Community School.

In the opening set of the matchup, both the Lady Panthers and Lady Cougars attacked each other with their powerful offenses, scratching and clawing at each other and fighting for control of the momentum. The home team Grace Community created space on the scoreboard late in the set, claiming the first set win over Bullard, 25-20.

Despite being down early, the visiting Lady Panthers quickly rebounded and began to make a comeback run against the home team Lady Cougars in the second set, pushing the set into extra points. However, Grace Community was able to leap ahead of Bullard and snatch away the second set victory, 27-25.

Down 2-0 entering the third set, Bullard attempted to battle its way back into the contest to avoid being swept. As the Lady Panthers and Lady Cougars ferociously battled each other, Grace Community yet again pulled ahead, as the home team Lady Cougars claimed the three-set victory in the matchup over the Lady Panthers, 25-20, 27-25, 25-20.

Defensively, the Lady Panther varsity volleyball team was led by senior defensive specialist Kailan Bellew in the contest against the Lady Cougars, contributing a total of 15 digs in Bullard's efforts.

Other significant contributors for the Lady Panthers against the Lady Cougars included sophomore outside hitter Sara McKeethan, with 12 digs, nine kills, four blocks, and one ace; senior setter Destinee Dixon, with 13 assists and 12 digs; freshman outside hitter/right side hitter Keili Richmond, with 10 digs, four kills, and one ace; and sophomore setter Kylie McKeethan, with eight digs and eight assists.

With the loss to the Grace Community Lady Cougars, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity volleyball team currently stands with an overall record of 16-9 on the 2017 season.
