Community turns out for Meet the Yellowjackets

On Saturday afternoon, the annual Meet the Yellowjackets event was held at Meredith Memorial Stadium. It was a bright, sunny day and everything looked pristine. The scoreboard proudly declared this was the home of the 2016 Division 7-3A State Champions.

Longhorn Ford was providing $20 donations to the booster club for each test drive of a new car. They also provided free hot dogs to everyone. Whataburger provided free water to help keep the crowd hydrated. A bounce house was available for the kids to be kids. Mineola Community Bank had a booth, and everyone was greeted by a new electronic sign, donated by Coca Cola, upon arriving to the stadium parking lot.

Several clinics were available during the event. The cheerleaders taught young boys and girls some of the basics of cheerleading. A number of parents gathered in what little shade was available in the stands to cheer on their children. Some members of the football team, including coaches, were on hand to conduct drills for future football stars. The children had a lot of fun and so did the parents.

After the clinics, the cheerleaders, the band and the football team all gathered at the stadium. Coach Luke Blackwell addressed the crowd and thanked everyone for coming to school with the right attitudes. He thanked the parents, the boosters, and the town for being great supporters of the school. Introductions then began. Everyone was announced by name as they ran out onto the field and gathered at the “M” – the band, the cheerleaders, and the football players. The stadium announcer, Jason Goodson, also announced the names of all participants for the volleyball and baseball teams.

After the announcements were complete, everyone in the stands was invited to go down on the field and form a circle around these students on the field and a prayer was offered by one of the seniors for safety for all at the school.

The event ended with the Sound of the Swarm playing a few songs, including the school fight song.
