Canton Lady Eagles soar past Brook Hill in three sets


Brook Hill (JV) def. Canton 25-20, 26-24

The Brook Hill Lady Guard junior varsity and varsity teams were back in action on the court last week, as the teams loaded the bus and traveled for a non-district matchup against the Canton Lady Eagles Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Canton High School.

The first matchup of the night featured the Lady Guard junior varsity volleyball team in action against the Lady Eagles.

In the first set, the Lady Guard began the contest with a powerful burst of offensive production, using their strategic weapons to overpower the Lady Eagles, en route to claiming the first set win, 25-20.

The Lady Guard and Lady Eagles battled ferociously against each other in the second set of play, as the teams traded points back and forth, stretching the contest into extra points. At the end of the set, it was the Lady Guard who were able to create separation on the scoreboard and claim the match win in two sets, 25-20, 26-24.

The defensive play of Lady Guard junior varsity volleyball's freshman middle blocker Lexi Turner was key for the team in its victory over the Canton Lady Eagles, contributing a total of four blocks in the matchup.

Other significant contributors for the Lady Guard junior varsity volleyball team against Canton included freshman setter Emily Livesay, with six assists; freshman right side hitter Morgan Maddox, with four digs, two kills, and one ace; freshman outside hitter Morgan Maddox, with three kills and thee digs; and freshman outside hitter Hallie Foster, with three kills.

Canton def. Brook Hill (V) 25-13, 25-23, 25-16

After the junior varsity matchup between Brook Hill and Canton, the school's varsity volleyball teams took to the court for a non-district contest.

In the first set, the Canton Lady Guard soared high early over the Brook Hill Lady Guard, as the home team's offensive power was on full display, allowing them to claim the first set victory, 25-13.

As the second set of the competition began, the Lady Guard and Lady Eagles were caught in a back-and-forth battle, as the two teams kept the set close on the scoreboard. However, Canton was able to have the ball roll their way near the end, as the Lady Eagles pocketed the win in the second set, 25-23.

Working to hold off a sweep, Brook Hill battled hard against Canton in the contest's third set of play, but the home team's offensive production was simply too much for the visiting Lady Guard to handle, as Canton claimed the victory in the matchup over Brook Hill in three sets, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16.

Lady Guard senior outside hitter/right side hitter Bailea Mapes was the team's leader defensively in the battle against the Lady Eagles, collecting a total of 12 digs, as well as four kills.

Other significant contributors for the lady Guard against the Lady Eagles included senior setter/right side hitter Maddie Anthony, with 17 assists, nine digs, and three aces; junior libero Kaitlyn Juarez, with eight digs; sophomore middle blocker Katherine Mondrik, with seven digs, four kills, and two blocks; junior outside hitter Madeline Reed, with six kills and five digs; and junior middle blocker Morgan Carpenter, with three kills and two blocks.

With a 0-1 record last week, the Brook Hill Lady Guard varsity volleyball team currently stands with an overall record of 3-11-1.
