Bullard prowls past SH, struggles late against Kilgore to split pair of district games

Returning to the hardwood and continuing their prowl through the district schedule last week was the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team, as the team played the part of host for a district matchup against the Spring Hill Lady Panthers Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Bullard High School’s Panther Gymnasium.

In the first quarter, the two teams were caught up in a jungle catfight to begin the contest, as the home team Bullard collected a total of nine points, while the visiting Spring Hill squad amassed a total of four points.

The offensive firepower of Bullard was present and accounted for in the second quarter of play, as Bullard scratched and clawed its way through the opponent’s defensive game plan, allowing Bullard to outscore Spring Hill, 20-5.

At the halftime break, the teams headed for the locker rooms with Bullard holding to a 29-9 lead over Spring Hill.

As the two teams made their way back onto the court for the second half of play, Bullard’s offensive power continued to flummox the Spring Hill defense, as Bullard netted a total of 16 points in the third quarter, compared to the nine points added by Spring Hill.

In the fourth quarter, Bullard left little doubt as to the eventual outcome of the district matchup, as Bullard outscored Spring Hill, 11-5, en route to claiming the district victory, 56-23.

In the win for the Bullard Lady Panthers, the team’s victory prowl was led by senior center Allie Kirgan, collecting a total of 19 points against Spring Hill.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Spring Hill included junior guard Sydney Foster, with 10 points, including two three-pointers; sophomore forward Haley Day, with 10 points; freshman guard Bailey Smith, with seven points; sophomore forward Erin Berry, with six points, including two three-pointers; senior center Bailey Baker, with two points; and freshman guard Beverly Howard, with two points.

With the victory over the Spring Hill Lady panthers to their credit, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team continued in district play by loading the bus and traveling to take on the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs Friday, Feb. 2, at Kilgore High School.

In the first quarter of play, the Lady Panthers and the Lady Bulldogs both showed their offensive teeth and attempted to scratch and claw at their opponent early in an effort to influence the game’s opening quarter of momentum. Kilgore was able to take an early lead in the game, netting eight first-quarter points, compared to the seven points collected by Bullard.

The visiting Bullard was able to prowl ahead of the home team Kilgore in the second quarter of play thanks to their strong offensive efforts, as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 12-4. At the halftime break, Bullard held to a 19-12 lead over Kilgore as the teams left the court bound for the locker rooms.

After both teams returned to the hardwood court for the second half of district basketball, the home team Lady Bulldogs brought their ferocious offensive efforts with them out of the locker room, as Kilgore scored a total of 11 points in the third quarter, compared to the six points collected by Bullard.

In the fourth quarter, the offensive snarl of the Lady Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Lady Panthers to overcome, as Kilgore dominated on both sides of the ball, adding 11 points to their total offensively, while also using their defense to limit the Lady Panthers to just one point in the final frame. At the final buzzer, Kilgore was victorious, defeating Bullard, 34-27.

Leading the Lady Panthers’ efforts in the district contest against the Lady Bulldogs was Kirgan, collecting a total of 11 points in the game.

Other significant contributors for Bullard against Kilgore included Berry, with 10 points, including three three-pointers; and Foster, with six points.

With a 1-1 record in district play last week, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity basketball team currently stands with an overall record of 28-8, 7-2 in district play on the 2017-2018 season.
