Bullard band sending 34 students to state contest


Panther band members qualifying for state Panther band members qualifying for state The Bullard High School Band won 88 First Division Gold Medals at the Region XXI U.I.L. Solo & Ensemble Contest on Saturday, Feb. 4 on Stephen F. Austin State University’s campus in Nacogdoches. The Panther Band had 51 students competing on woodwind, brass and percussion solos and ensembles.

“I am very proud of all these students that competed. Studying and performing this literature that they do not see in the full band setting, helps make our band program better,” Band Director Gary Jordan said.

The Panther Band received three Division I (Superior) ratings on solos and 85 Division I (Superior) ratings on their ensembles.

Plumb, Rachel Rieger, Dorian Schutt, Katy Shumate, Sheridan Smith, Mack Stewart, Rebecca Wilson. Brass Quartet: Cullen Hippler, Dessie McFarland, Taylor Morris and Stayten Shaw. Tuba/Euphonium Quartet: Matt Carr, Tawni Newburn, Matthew Peters and Billy Tomlin. Brass Sextet: Cullen Hippler, Madeline McAlister, Dessie McFarland, Taylor Morris, Tawni Newburn and Matthew Peters. Medium Ensemble (Jazz Band): Garrett Green, Clay Pierce, Josh Butler, J.T. Plumb, Dorian Schutt, Taylor Morris, Cullen Hippler, Michael Raguay, Caitlin Adams, Dessie McFarland, Staylen Shaw, Matthew Peters, Daniel Armstrong, Billy Tomlin, Ryan York, Josh Maple, Daniel Shumate and Connor McClenny.

Thirty-four of these students who received a First Division rating will advance to the Texas U.I.L. State Solo & Ensemble Contest. Eleven of these students qualified on two events bringing the total number of state qualifications to 45. Competing in multiple events will be Zoe Bowles, Cullen Hippler, Josh Maple, Dessie McFarland, Taylor Morris, Tawni Newburn, Matthew Peters, Mallory Philpott, Cameron Sanson, Mack Stewart and Billy Tomlin.
