Bullard High School participated in Coaches vs. Cancer, a national event where college and high school basketball teams sell support items and donate the funds to cancer research organizations and victims.

The Bullard Lady Panthers varsity team played Chapel Hill at home on Tuesday, Jan. 24. During the game, Tshirts, pink sunglasses and cutouts with the donators’ names on them to be hung inside the gym were sold, as well as an iPod being raffled off.

Coach Greg Gay, in the team’s third year in participation, said he hopes the school will raise roughly $2,000 to donate. He said part of the donations will go to Mrs. Alaina Cannon, a BISD teacher whose cancer, thought to be in remission, has unfortunately returned. The remainder of donations will go to the Cancer Foundation for Life.

Gay said about 330 T-shirts were purchased, with Southside Bank reportedly donating $500 to help offset the production costs.

“Cancer affects so many people, and we want to do everything we can to help,” said Gay.

The Lady Panthers’ game against Chapel Hill marked the beginning of the team’s second round of district play.
