Baker’s ‘Hot Wheels’ leads comeback win; Pirates are ‘ARR’ coming
GRADY DENNIS
BULLARD - Down two scores with eight minutes left, senior quarterback, Tyler Baker took the game over, running for a pair of late touchdowns to give The Guard their second win of the season as thy topped out Dallas Parish Episcopal 27-21 on Friday at Herrington Stadium.
The highly-recruited, Baker finished with 136 yards rushing and 94 more through the air. His 52-yard touchdown run pulled the Guard (2-0) to within 21-19 with 7:25 to play.
After Brook Hill held Parish Episcopal (1-1) on a fourth-and-2 at midfield, Baker took the first play of the drive 45 yards to the Panther 2. Baker called his own number again on the next play, finishing the drive with a dive into the end zone. The pointafter pass to a wide-open J.B. Moss on the point-after try gave the Guard the 27-21 lead with 3:58 to play.
A staunch defense spear-headed by Tallen Harris, Jared Dickey, Grady Dennis, Moss and Baker also made key plays defensively for the Guard as they had a tough time stopping the Parish rushing attack, rolling up 320-yards.
TALLEN HARRIS
The Guard got on the board first on a fake field goal from the Panther 4. Back to kick, Moss instead took a pitch and outran all comers to the pylon for six. However, Moss missed the ensuing PAT.
The Panthers responded with a sevenminute, 16-play drive that encompassed 79 yards for Panthers first lead at 7-6.
Baker answered right back bobbled a squib kick, recovered it at his own 4 and sprinted through the Parish Episcopal defense for a touchdown. With the score, the Guard took a 12-6 lead into halftime.
A 77-yard score came midway through the third quarter as Parish Episcopal took a 14-12 lead.
Parish stretched the lead to 21-12 as a three-yard score and PAT had Brook Hill worried.
That was before Baker took over with the final two scores, and the pass to Moss for the win.

“This was a good win for us,” said Brook Hill head coach, Terry Pirtle after the game. “They are a playoff team from a year ago that went deep into the playoffs and should do the same again this year.
“They have got some talent but I feel like we made the big plays when we needed them and that is all you can ask of your team,” Pirtle added.
The Guard (2-0), will have another handful of runners to trek down on Friday as the Pittsburg Pirates come to Herrington Stadium for a 7:30 kickoff.
Pittsburg pounded Palestine 51-16 last week.
