American Legion Post to open in Bullard
Plans are in the making for the opening of an American Legion Post in Bullard, 3rd District Commander Linda Reed said.
“Congratulations, Bullard. The American Legion is establishing roots in the great city of Bullard so as to make an impact in the community for its veterans and pride in country.”
Meetings are scheduled for the fourth Thursday of each month at First Baptist Church, at 6:30 p.m.
Reed said the new post will be named for a deceased local hero.
Plans for the new post include forming an auxiliary unit, Sons of the American Legion Squadron, and an American Legion Riders chapter almost immediately.
The legion is based on four basic principles throughout most chapters: veteran and families, children and youth, community, and national security.
Through the veteran and families programs, the legion helps connect veterans and their families to programs by innumerable agencies and organizations, including the GI Bill, Heroes to Hometown, Wounded Warrior, and Ride to Recovery programs, Reed said.
Children and youth consist of over 250 programs. Many are scholarship programs easily attainable and do not require military service, Reed said.
For example, the Oratorical Scholarship program, including an award for over $2,000, was recently awarded to a Texas student.
Boys and Girls state and nation programs are available to students interested in law, politics, or government.
Students travel to Austin or Washington, D.C., for an understanding of the U.S. political system.
Scouting programs and American Legion baseball are other programs benefitting youth.
Other programs include Jr. Law Cadet, family support, child-health and safety, and junior shooting.
“The legions programs help to pull all Americans together for the purpose of unity, caring, and commitment,” Reed said. “The American Legion prides itself on being a family organization and welcomes everyone to attend. We are looking forward to helping communities come back to the front porch pride.”
Those who have served in the military during a war or conflict are eligible to join.
Also eligible are children, step-children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of someone who served.
