ATHENS - Alex Sauza rushed for three touchdowns and the Fort Worth Nolan Vikings downed
the Athens Hornets at Bruce Field on Friday. After two first-quarter field goals by Hans Ingold,
Nolan racked up 14 consecutive points in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Sauza and a
16-yard fumble return by Jake Shea. Athens closed the gap to 20-7 on a 78-yard scoring pass
from Tevin Watson to Kendall Sanders before Sauza scored again on a 21-yard run to give the
Vikings a 27-7 lead. The Hornets made it 27-14 in the third on a 33-yard TD pass from Watson
to Cameron Darty. Nolan stretched its lead 34-14 on a 2-yard Sauza run in the third, but Athens
came back on a 50-yard touchdown run by Sanders to trail 34-21. The Hornets made a fourthquarter
charge, scoring for a final time on a 45-yard pass from Watson to Sanders.
Brownsboro 20, Palestine 14
PALESTINE - The Brownsboro Bears held off a late charge from the Palestine Wildcats Friday
to open 2010 with a 20-14 victory. Bears’ defensive lineman Coby Ramirez picked off Wildcat
quarterback Kenny Green’s last second pass to seal the win for Brownsboro inside the five-yard
line. Brownsboro quarterback Ryan Owens connected with Deondre Taylor from 34 yards out
for what would be the game-winning score with just over three-and-a-half minutes remaining in
the contest. Bears’ running back Keuntis Thompson scored two touchdowns on the ground for
Brownsboro, while Palestine running back Terrance Simon logged 145 yards on 25 carries and
one score. With Brownsboro leading 7-0 in the second quarter, Palestine’s Jeremy Sias blocked a
Bear’s punt into the endzone, resulting in the touchdown that would keep the game tied going
into halftime.
Center 47, Rusk 0
CENTER - From the first play of the game — a 90-yard kick off return by Center’s Ty Hubbard
— it appeared as if the Rusk Eagles would be in for a long night. It was, indeed, a difficult
evening for the young Eagles as Center rolled to a convincing 47-0 win at Roughrider Stadium.
The game was the season opener for both schools. The ‘Riders led 20-0 after the opening quarter
and put the game out of reach in the second stanza by adding 14 more points as Center
owned a 34-0 advantage at the break. Following a scoreless third frame, the ‘Riders tacked on 13
points on a rushing touchdown and on a 39-yard scoring toss from Cameron Cloudy to Se’Ryan
Netherly in the final period. Center quarterback Ryan Goodwin had a big evening as he rushed
for a team-best 99 yards and passed for 69 yards. Goodwin went 5-for-16 through the air and had
a touchdown pass. The ‘Riders racked up 319 yards of total offense while holding Rusk to just
100 net yards in the game. Eagle quarterback Trey Thrash paced Rusk with 32 yards on 15
scampers while Chaston Bennett had 27 yards in 10 totes. Rusk will look to bounce back at 7:30
p.m. Friday by entertaining Crockett.
Chapel Hill 50, Westwood 10
CHAPEL HILL - The Chapel Hill Bulldogs were anything but re-building in the season opener
Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. Junior quarterback Avery Saenz led the onslaught by throwing
for six touchdowns in Chapel Hill's 50-10 rout of Palestine Westwood. Chapel Hill (1-0) entered
the new season with several players returning with starting experience. One of the question
marks was at quarterback. Consider that answered. Saenz, who played sparingly as a freshman
and was not with the varsity last year, began the new year on fire, completing 14 of 17 throws.
Three of his scoring strikes went to junior Avery Henderson, who finished with 116 yards on five
receptions.
