Baker leads Brook Hill to win over Lake Worth in classic
BULLARD – The Brook Hill Guard could not wait until Saturday night as they debuted the latest edition of the Guard football team.
Brook Hill, the host team for the three-day Austin Bank-DeHaven Eye Clinic Brook Hill Football Classic wrapped up the inaugural classic with a 27-20 win over a tough Fort Worth- Lake Worth team.
The Bullfrogs posted an undefeated district ledger in District 7-3A action last year to finish with an 8-4 playoff season.
The Guard took only two plays for Brook Hill’s ‘Dynamic Duo’ of quarterback Tyler Baker and wide receiver, J.B. Moss to put their first points of the season on the board as a 41-yard bomb to Moss put Brook Hill ahead 6-0.
Lake Worth then took the ensuing kickoff on a 76-yard drive, capped off with a Everette Miller five-yard plunge to even the score. Carlos Montalabo then booted the PAT kick true for a 7- 6, Bullfrog lead at the 4:08 mark of the opening stanza.

Baker then scored for Brook Hill returning a Bullfrog punt 79 yards to pay dirt. The PAT kick struck the upright falling short for a 12-7, Guard lead.
Short lived however, as Bullfrog running back, Miller returned the ensuing kickoff to the Guard 49. Just one play later, Christopher Alexander waited on a Chitty bomb at the ten yard line, and raced in for the goahead again at 13-12.
Lake Worth tacked on to the lead with a 84-yard bomb to Brandon Melendez, and the Bullfrog PAT kick was good for a 20-12
Brook Hill evened up the score before the break as the senior signalcaller, Baker connected with Travis Pirtle for a 26 yard gain, down to the 16 of Lake Worth. Two plays later, Baker rambled in from 3-yards away, and an A.J. Minter PAT reception from Baker evened the score 20-20, at the half.
“I think the adjustments we made at the half had a lot to do with our defensive success in the last half,” said Brook Hill head coach, Terry Pirtle. “We had some players like Tallen Harris, Jared Dickey, Grady Dennis and a few others that took over up front on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
“And any time you have Tyler Baker running the team, I have all the confidence in the world and his decisions and he had a great game,” Pirtle bragged on his two-way all-stater.
The second half momentum went Brook Hill’s way as defensive lineman, Harris made a fumble recovery at the 35 yard line.
A first down pass to Jared Dickey from Baker and a reception by Ross Lee inside the five, The Guard was set up at the Bullfrog, one yard line.
Baker then simply scooted in of the left end untouched for the goahead. Moss did convert the PAT kick and a 27-20 Guard game-winner.
The Brook Hill defense continued to stiffen as they shutout the Bullfrogs in the third quarter, forcing their second punt of the game.
The defensive standoff continued through out the final period as the Guard defense turned back two, fourth-down attempts in the final sixminutes for the score to remain 27-20 for the final score.
Aiding in rolling up 376 total yards, Baker ran for 110 yards on 27 carries and was 14-of-19 for 193 yards and two rushing scores, a punt return of 79-yarrds for a tally, plus one TD pass.
Moss made three catches for 49 yards and a score, while Jared Dickey hauled in three passes for 35 yards. Dickey also added eight tackles defensively.
Baker, Gunnar Dorsey and Harris all made big fumble recoveries to thwart Bullfrog drives in the game, and the stout Guard defense turned back four, fourthdown attempts by the visitors on the night.
The Guard (1-0) will entertain Parish Episcopal on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
