AAU Competition finished for Spears

ORLANDO, FLA. - The summer AAU season is over for Bullard’s Minta Spears, after traveling nation-wide with Team Hensle-Elite Cy-Fair this past summer.

This past week, the junior-to-be aided her team to a third-place finish in the prestigious Tournament of Champions.

Cy-Fair started off with a runaway win over the Michigan Crossover, 57-27.

“They were very athletic and tried to press us, but it backfired,” said Minta after game one. “We shot the ball well as a team.”

Spears alone had 14 points, including four 3-pointers.

Next up for the Team Hensle –Elite crew was playing North Tartan from Minnesota, and the North Tartan crew beat Cy-Fair, 71-57.

Down by 27 points at one point before making a comeback that fell short, Spears led the team in scoring with 11 points.

One of the top-ranked teams in the tourney was next on the ducat for Cy-Fair, playing against Ring City from New York.

Cy-Fair started off hot behind Spears scoring nine of 11 points to start the game, and ended up with 15 points for the game, on the way to a 58-53 win. Peyton Little from Abilene Wylie joined Spears, with 15 points in the win.

Going in to elimination play, Cy-Fair played Indiana Family and won 67-49.

Spears had another great game, scoring 11 points and nailing two 3-pointers that were from NBA range.

Spears and Little continue to lead the team in points and minutes.

Next up was the Tennessee Flight in the quarter finals.

“This was a tough game,” Spears said. “Flight has the top program in the country and this was a great experience.”

The Tennessee Flight team took the narrow one-point win, 59-58, and was also one of Spear’s top games of the entire summer. Spears scored 21 points and busted three treys.

In the game, Cy –Fair never trailed by more than 10 points She ended up with 21 points and 3 3s. We never led and were down by 10 points, but when Flight took the double-digit lead, Spears took over.

Spears hit two free throws with 1:55 to go, to put Cy-Fair ahead for the first time in the game, 56-55.

Cy-Fair did have a shot at the win, with a last second shot that would not fall to end the summer season.

“Oh well, the summer is over and I’m looking forward to a good high school season this year,” the All District MVP added.

Spears finished out the season averaging 14.3 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals each outing..
