Tryouts for the Bullard Belles Drill Team were April 16 and 24, and girls were chosen to be a part of the second line of Bullard Belles.
The Belles were created in the fall 2009 with Shelly Johnston as director. In their inaugural year, the Belles performed at pep rallies, football games, basketball games and community parades, participated in community service activities and hosted Baby Belles night and “Jingle with the Belles.”
They also won six awards at a Crowd Pleasers Competition in Round Rock in February. The awards included first runner up Grand Champions; first place Small Team-Pom and Novelty Routines; first runner-up-Military Sweepstakes (received 90 and above on all scores); and the Precision Merit Award.
The Belles Premier was held in March with performances by Bullard High School and Bullard Middle School dance classes, BHS choir, BHS drum line and the Bullard Belles Drill Team.
Though the drill team is in its second year of existence, it is their desire to provide more entertainment for the community and supporters in the next year, Johnson said.
Drill Team girls have already begun their training for the 2010-2011 school year with after school practices. Belles officials said it will take hundreds of hours of dance practice to perform the precision routines for next year. Belles are also responsible for attending dance technique classes during the summer on their own time. The Bullard Belles will have their Line Camp the first week in August to prepare for football season.
The drill team will host a camp June 14-16 for younger girls aspiring to be on the drill team in the future at Bullard High School. Participants learned dance technique, dance routines and etiquette.
