BULLARD — Defending Eagle’s Bluff champion, Dr. Frank Duphorne cruised to his sixth consecutive club golf title and eighth overall, winning the Championship Flight by eight strokes.
Duphorne carded a 75 on Sunday to finish at 229 for the three-round event. He won the net championship, as well.
“I played consistent golf with the exception of a few holes, and I drove the ball really well in the tournament,” said Dr. Duphorne. “And Sunday I putted the best I have in a long time.”
Jim O’Toole took home second, shooting 237 for the tournament. O’Toole was Duphorne’s only threat in the final round, but started the back nine with consecutive bogeys and allowed Duphorne to par out for the victory.
Duphorne had talked the last several years of not playing in the tournament, but the opposition always want him back.
“I tried to not play for the last couple of years, but the guys put me under pressure to play so bad, I had too,” said the eight-time winner. ‘I think they just want me to play until they can beat me.”
David Pickett followed his 77 in the opening round with an 80 on Sunday, to win the First Flight by six strokes over Lance Marshall. Marshall carded an 82 on Sunday, following an 81 on Saturday.
The comeback of the tournament occurred in the Senior First Flight. Warren Johnson trailed by five strokes after the first round, but fought back on Sunday to win by three strokes over Douglas Malone.
Malone shot 84 on Sunday, allowing Johnson’s 157 to win the two-day tournament.
Bill Ferguson held on to win the Second Flight, firing a 181 over two days. Ferguson led by 11 strokes after one round, and finished 15 strokes ahead of Brian Myers.
