Need a hand? Let them know

For the third consecutive year, members of Chapelwood United Methodist Church will travel from Houston to Bullard to meet practical needs through volunteer service.

More than 300 participants will make the trip, which consists of middle school, high school, and college-age volunteers, along with adult chaperones. The caravan group will arrive on Sunday, June 20, and will perform local service work in collaboration with Bullardarea churches until Friday, June 25. They will divide into teams and do basic construction and repairs throughout the community.

The group needs a list of work orders, so anyone interested in the assistance that will be provided will need to call Hazel Mason at (903) 521-5711. Also, contact relatives, neighbors or friends to determine if any work may be needed at their home, so they can be added to the list.

They will clean yards, paint (including outside painting), mow, construct handicap ramps and other carpentry work, mend fences and more. The work will be completed at no cost for labor or materials to the homeowner.

In celebration of the week’s accomplishments, volunteers will have dinner at the First United Methodist Church of Bullard Thursday evening, June 24, along with local residents who benefited from a service project. In years past, Chapelwood’s participating young people have learned valuable life lessons while serving the Bullard community, which includes the realization that serving others is more than a duty.

Chapelwood members will be wearing purple shirts depicting their 2010 service project theme, The Amazing Race. Based on the Biblical passage found in First Corinthians 9:28, the group is focused on “running for an imperishable crown” while serving Bullard residents.

The youth groups, who also will do some work at the Mission House in Bullard, will be staying at three Bullard churches, including First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church and Southern Baptist Church.
