We’ll miss Russell
The hundreds of new people who have moved to our city in the past seven years do not know and the hundreds who will move here in the future will not know how Russell Scott has affected their lives.
Russell lost a courageous battle with cancer a couple of weeks ago.
In 1997, Russell took time away from his business and family to run for the city council. He was elected and would serve five years as a councilman and one as Mayor Pro Tem; all unpaid positions.
Russell was there when we built the current city hall. He was there when we got the state legislature to make us the smallest city in Texas have a court of records.
Russell was there when we enlarged and better equipped the police department. And there when we started the street overlay program that took us from the worst streets in Texas to some of the best.
Russell was there for the founding of the Bullard Area Chamber of Commerce, the erection of the Veteran’s Monument and the gazebo. He was there when the Red, White, & Blue festival was started and when the land was obtained for the new library.
Russell was there when we started enforcing city ordinances. And he was there to take the heat as we dragged the city kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. These are just the highlights of the times he was there.
The people of our city owe him a debt of gratitude. I was proud to have him as a colleague and a friend.
B. J. Langford,
former mayor
