Suspicious package found at Post Office

By DON TREUL

Law enforcement responded to an unusual package left at the Bullard Post Office.

According to Bullard Police Chief Gary Don Lewis, a customer reported a suspicious looking package left on the counter of the Post Office at about 5 p.m. Thursday, June 3. Bullard Police Sgt. Jeff Bragg, who was the investigating officer, responded and confirmed that there was indeed a box or package left on the counter and no other customers were in the building. The box did not seem to be addressed properly and the return address was blacked out with a marker. Additionally, some of the tape wrapping the box was loose.

Bragg evacuated the building and called in Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal Oren Hale, who investigated the suspicious package. By the appearance of the package, Hale determined it was safe enough to remove from the building to a nearby open pasture.

“It was not typical of a bomb in the way it was packaged,” said Hale, who has been investigating similar incidents for 15 years.

Further investigation revealed a satellite TV converter box that was apparently being returned to Direct TV, likely in Dallas.

Lewis said it appeared that someone left the box with a Direct TV label at the Post Office believing that it would be picked up by a delivery service. He said delivery services, such as UPS and Fed-Ex do not retrieve packages at the Post Office.

There were no injuries and Lewis said the incident is still under investigation. The Bullard Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the emergency.
