Guest Column by Bullard High School Newspaper Journalists

A letter to the advisor

When you’re a journalist it’s only natural to come across some pretty extraordinary people.

After all, it is your job to make their story heard (or rather read). Needless to say, I have met pretty unforgettable people through the great things they’ve done — making sure their stories were intertwined with vibrant verbs and adjectives.

But no matter how many people I have interviewed or doted on, there is one extraordinary person that has never made her way into articles with my 10-point byline; she has never graced a photo or been the subject of a catchy headline. Nevertheless, her story has intertwined its way into my life, impacting me in ways unimaginable, helping me write the story of my life.

Walking into high school as a freshman can be anything but enticing. Scanning my schedule filled with classes I knew I was going to dread, I quickly recognized the class that would make everything better — journalism. And I was right. Four years later, I still get excited when it’s time to write a column or interview someone new. But I never could have done any of that without the assistance of Mrs. Melissa Vining, my newspaper advisor and UIL coach.

Mrs. Vining has been a part of my life for four years. In that time, I have learned so much more than how to be a journalist, but also who I am as a person. She stood by me and encouraged me as freshman when I felt like giving up. Now as editor-in-chief of our highly recognized newspaper, I am so appreciative to have the guidance and support she has instilled in me. I never could even dream of attaining academics awards for my writing; however Mrs. Vining coached me through everything with faith in my abilities. Now I never fail to disappoint her in competing and trying my best to bring home something. She taught me to not only be a good writer, but also how to be a leader.

I can’t imagine my life without someone as inspiring and ultimately wonderful as Mrs. Vining. No amount of words could describe how thankful I am to have been blessed with such an amazing advisor, coach and friend, and I hope that she continues to impel her students with the same kindness as I have received through knowing her.

For that, I am eternally grateful.
