San Jac-‘ked’ by Brook Hill; Waco Riecher next in Athens
BULLARD - Lady Guard second baseman, Kelsey Barton went 2 for 3 with five RBIs and a double, to lead the Lady Guard to a 15-3 victory over Amarillo San Jacinto in a TAPPS 3A area playoff game.
They finished off the district with only one loss and a 40-1 record, for the six seniors on this year’s squad over the last four years.T
he Lady Guard continued their prowess on the softball diamond, as the Lady Guard smashed the ball again with 12 hits, setting up a regional final on Tuesday night against defending state champion, Waco-Reicher.
Barton and the Lady Guard got started early with three runs in the first, as Barton hit a two-run single. Adding on in the seven-run third, saw Mary Caroline Selden rip for a RBI-triple to highlight the inning.
Brook Hill stretched its lead to 15-1 with a five-run fourth, starting out the inning with four singles and a two-run double from Barton. Selden added a two-run triple for the team’s final two runs.
Selden finished out her day at the plate going 2-for-3, with a triple and a double, three RBI’s, and scored one run.
Brook Hill pitcher, Sarah Mullicane was in control throughout the game, striking out 11, walking three, and allowing six hits.
Walks got Lady Guard pitcher, Mullicane into trouble in the fourth, when the Lady Patriots scored once.
An error in the fifth inning by Brook Hill aided San Jacinto in the fifth. Along with the error, a wild pitch led to two more runs for San Jacinto, but far from enough to get excited about.
To lead San Jacinto, Lady Patriots catcher, Chambree Kimbrell scored two of her team’s runs, going 1-for-2 with a walk, while her battery mate, Hannah Ryan walked seven batters without recording a strikeout.
Lady Guard shortstop, Carley Howard went 3-for-3 and and scored three times for Brook Hill, as well.
Mullicane also contributed at the plate, scoring three times, walking twice, and getting one hit.
“I’m just really proud of the girls, and they have really been a joy to coach and be around,” said Brook Hill head coach, Amanda Reed.
The winner of the Reicher-Brook Hill affair on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Athens High School Field, advances to the state tournament to play the winner of Ovilla Christian-Katy Pope John Paul XXIII at 2:30 p.m. at Waco ISD, Field No. 1.
Katy-Faith West plays Galveston-O’Connell in the other regional quarterfinal matchup, with the winner playing the winner of Lubbock Christian-Frisco Legacy.
