Jeannie McFarland, the family and consumer sciences teacher at Bullard High School, has an unusual classroom on the campus.
It’s actually a kitchen. That’s right, a kitchen with stoves, sinks and counters.
Among the things she does, she also teaches students how to cook a variety of dishes, and her classes seem as popular with boys as it is with girls.
McFarland offers her students the opportunity each year to enter the Platinum Chef Competition. Students receive their ingredients one day, and the recipes the next. Students work in teams and they have 90 minutes to prepare their dishes.
This year, the recipes had to include sour cream. The dishes included Sour Cream Potato Soup, Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas, Southwestern Guacamole Wrap and Cream Cheese Mocha Cake.
“I want them to take what they learn in class and apply it,” McFarland said. “It gives them a sense of accomplishment.”
This year’s judges included Bullard High School Principal Scott Franks, Donna Jeffus, dean of students, and Jenifer French, director of operations for Olive Garden Restaurants.
The winning team for the Platinum Chef Competition was Team Ybarra, which included Eric Ybarra, Zachary Fullen and Mathew Lydy. Their dish was the Southwestern Guacamole Wrap.
Team Shaw’s Cream Cheese Mocha Cake and Team Jones’ Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas tied for second place. Team Sulser’s Sour Cream Potato Soup placed fourth in the competition.
