BULLARD – Say what you want about those ‘crazy baseball superstitions,’ but just ask Trevor Rumbelow if he believes.
Last week on Tuesday night, big brother and Bullard fireballer, Nick Rumbelow was one out shy of a no-hitter.
In the dugout, the freshman designated hitter made a freshman mistake. “He’s one out away from a no-hitter,” Trevor said to the bench.
As all the coaches and reserves turned to look at the freshman’s face after his blunder, he slapped a single to left field for the only hit by Gilmer, in a 6-0 District 17-3A opening win over the Buckeyes.
Young Trevor retired to the farthest corner of the dugout and just hoped big brother would get him off the hook of a blown shutout. A nub-shot to the mound ended the game, and the ribbing for Trevor was on.
Thank goodness for the young bomber at the plate…. it was a local game with no bus trip.
The senior LSU-signee, Rumbelow struckout 14, walked only one, and gave in to a single to Colton Hill, with two outs in the final inning.
Rumbelow aided his cause on the mound going 2-for-3, and the lone Panther with two hits.
Taft Rose ripped a double down the right field line to add an RBI, and Tanner Bailey had a sacrifice RBI for the final run, scoring Koby Greene in the fourth inning..
The downfall for the Buckeyes began in the second inning, as three hits and three walks produced a 4-0 lead.
In JV action, Gilmer took advantage of seven errors and six hits to jump out to a 11-0 lead, batting through the order before the Panthers ever went to bat.
The Panthers did bounce back to score three runs on only one hit in the bottom of the first inning, but that would be all the multiple scoring for the rest of the game.
Losing pitcher, Garren Whisenhunt struggled on the mound, but blasted two doubles, for two RBI’s and one run scored in the loss.
After beating Tatum last Friday night, Gladewater was in town last night, and the Panthers will entertain Chapel Hill on Friday night. The JV game starts at 5 .m.
