Karen Land, Iditarod Musher, and her dog, Borage, visited The Brook Hill Lower School. Land described what it takes to be an Iditarod Musher, showing the sled and equipment she used in her 2004 bid to win the dog sled race from Anchorage to Nome (1,100 miles over very challenging snowy and icy terrain). She related the great lengths participants go to in an effort to protect their dogs, who really love to run this race. The race participants can experience temperature down to 50 degrees below zero. Land shared captivating stories of her dogs, her races, both successful and not so successful, and her trips. Borage, a now retired Alaskan Husky, wandered freely during her talk greeting kids and getting petted and hugged. (Photo Courtesy of Linda Seronello)
