NBC not on same network as Guard, 59-43

MANSFIELD — The Brook Hill Guard thrived on a 43-22 rebounding edge, scoring numerous second shots en route to a 59-43 win over New Braunsfels Chritian, in the state TAPPS Division III semi-finals at Summitt High School on Friday night.

Brook Hill got away with a horrid shooting night (shooting 33 percent, and 29 percent from long range), but senior do-it-all, Jeremey Chappelle scored 21 points, and the league MVP, Chappelle grabbed 21 rebounds.

Brook Hill’s slow-down, ‘Wally-Ball’ persistence ran up seven points in the first quarter, as the Guard trailed after eight minutes, 9-7.

It was the first time the Guard trailed at any point throughout the playoffs.

The Guard battled back in the second quarter on a 6-0 run, and ended it on a 14-0 spree to take a 27-14 lead into halftime. Brook Hill also held a rebounding advantage in the first half over NBC, of 23-12.

NBC didn’t go away in the second half, and unlike previous Brook Hill playoff games this season, the Guard had to fight until the end.

Mason Spradlin was all over the court with 12 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists. He scored seven during the second period rush, as his free throws put the Guard up by double digits for the rest of the way.

Senior, all-district mentions, Colton Townley finished with nine points and John Clardy chipped in eight.

Clardy led the rebounding with nine, followed by ‘Super-Soph’ Austin Langemeier and Chappelle, with eight apiece.

“The second chance points and put backs I thought were big and free throws,” said Dawkins, whose squad went 15-for-18 from the charity stripe, while the Wildcats were below .500 with a 6-of-18 freebie count.
