MANSFIELD – The third time was not the charm for Brook Hill this past Saturday, as they lost in the TAPPS Division III championship game, 73-60 to Fort Worth-Lake Country at Mansfield’s Summit High Schol Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The state champion, Lake Country, shot 52 percent for the game, and Brook Hill focused on two big-time players, and then there were four.

Jack Miller and Jesse Jackson were averaging 18 points each, coming into the season finale.

The Guard shut them down to a degree, but Josh Luethe and Nate Jackson were waiting for their shot, and the duo combined to make seven 3-pointers, missing only two attempts from long-range.

Miller did manage to lead his team in scoring with 17 points, though most came in the fourth quarter and on free throws. He added four rebounds, two steals, and five assists. Jesse Jackson scored 12 and had nine rebounds.

The Eagles (27-3) claimed their first Division II basketball title, while Brook Hill has now came in as runner-up in football, soccer, and basketball. .

All district performers, Tyler Baker scored a game-high 22, and Jeremey Chappelle added 17 points and eight rebounds for Brook Hill.

Lake Country post, J.C. Matthews scored 16, half of which came on midrange jumpers.

Dawkins said he used a box-and-one on Miller, so he could not dictate the game. But Miller gave Lake Country a 2-0 lead before play began, courtesy of a Brook Hill technical for pre-game dunking. That alone set a tone The Guard should have never allowed.

The Guard trailed 34-25 and did manage to make it close, at 35-32 with 5:10 left in the third.. However, with a chance to close the gap, Brook Hill was called for a charge and Luethe turned around and hit a wide-open 3.

After Chappelle hit one of two free throws, he put back his miss to pull Brook Hill back to within 3. But Matthews hit a jumper and Luethe followed with another 3-pointer, and the Guard were never again in striking distance.

The all-tournament team honored Brook Hill’s Jeremey Chappelle, Mason Spradlin, and Tyler Baker. The rest of the all-tourney squad consisted of Cale Brubaker, New Braunfels Christian; Zach Kresta, New Braunfels Christian; Jalam Lewis, All Saints; Brad Robertson, All Saints; Jack Miller, Lake Country; Jesse Jackson, Lake Country; and J.C.
