Brook Hill’s Dickey headed to Georgetown Hoyas
Top, Heath Dickey (on right), and his brother, Jared Dickey, team up to make it a family matter in the playoff win over Austin-Regents this past season in the state semifinals at Groesbeck Stadium, in Groesbeck, TX. Above, Heath always up for a grin, gets loaded up to lead the drive to the state finals after the win against Regents. The attire not a bad idea, with the holiday traffic. You have been a really good football player to have started for five years and never lost a district game in five years of middle school (one year), and an entire high school career.
All the better to be blessed enough to have raked-in the personal accolades throughout four years at The Brook Hill School, playing in a state final four in two sports and earning a medal at the TAPPS state track and field championships last year.
The ‘Big Hoss’ Heath Dickey, has made a verbal commitment to play football at the next level in the nation’s capital, Georgetown University.
(Banner Staff Photos by Paul Dickey) “I’d decided I wanted to get into politics, so my father and I went to D.C. to check out the schools,” the 6’7, two-way allstate performer this past season, Dickey began. “I wanted to go to school in D.C. for the internship opportunities.
“Georgetown has a beautiful campus with more history than you could write a book on, Dickey said getting pump-up talking about his opportunity. “It’s political association is unrivaled in the U.S. which is perfect for my plans.”
Dickey wrapped up Georgetown talk adding, “I intend to graduate with a political science degree in four years and continue my studies at Georgetown’s law program.”
Football is in the plans too, but you know how those politicians like to stress a point! For Georgetown Hoya football information log on to http://guhoyas.cstv.com/sports/mfootbl/gu-m-footbl-body.html
After a move to Brook Hill after the eighth grade because his current school was not playing football at that time, the Brook Hill experience has truly been a family affair for The ‘Big Hoss’.
Not only does little brother, Jared, (sophomore, all-state linebacker), and his freshman brother, Mason play for the Guard, add-on two cousins, Grady Dennis and best friend, Justin Northcutt.
“So when I say this team is my family … I really mean it,” Dickey meant in more ways than one.
Northcutt and Dickey have never lost a district game in 5 years of Brook Hill football, to really make this past season a family feat.
Great coaching, and great teachers were the topic given credit by the team captain, Govenor Dickey when asked about his playing days at Brook Hill.
”I don’t know many people besides me and my friend Justin (Northcutt), we had a great offensive line coach my freshman year, David Clapp and my junior and senior years, John Rutherford has shaped me into the lineman I am.
Dickey added, “However, if it were not for Coach Pirtle and the publicity he brought to Brook Hill there would have been no chance for me to play at the next level.”
Now, after all that and sports memories for a lifetime, Dickey still credits the teachers as his favorite thing about Brook Hill.
“I personally do not know where you can find better teachers that care for you more. That includes every person from the bottom all the way up to Mr. Dement.”
As far as memories on the field, The ‘Big Hoss’ grins and said, “I also took pride in any of an assortment of “Dickey-Dives” (along with the concussions I received from them), that I passed out throughout my career.”
Sporting a hefty academic resume and an athletic history maker for The Guard, other schools hoping for Dickey pancakeblocks and ‘Dickey-Dives,’ were University Louisiana Monroe, Texas State University, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, and Baylor, among other smaller Division II and II schools due to Dickey’s GPA.
Just a few weeks ago, Dickey and teammates made school and Bullard football history, with the first football state championship appearance. For Dickey, the loss to Waco Reicher 35-28 in Killeen was a virtual swing of emotions few ever get to experience.
“Playing for the state game was the most exhilarating thing I’ve ever done in my life,” the future Hoya said, “I’ve never been as emotionally charged and subsequently drained, as I was the night of the state game.”
A few lessons learned….one the hard way with the state finals setback.
“Good things like humility and camaraderie came out of the loss to Reicher,” the ‘Big Hoss’ added quickly, “but better things like pride and immortality would’ve came out of a victory, though.”
”I love Brook Hill and look forward to coming back to Bullard in December next year, to watch them finish what my boys Zach (Cool), Jeremey (Chappelle), Justin (Northcutt and I were blessed enough to start.”
