Lady Guard splits season openers
The Brook Hill Lady Guard basketball team started off the new season with a split in their games this past week, playing both games at Herrington gymnasium on the Brook Hill campus.
Brook Hill took a 38-35 win over Union Grove to open the year. Cushing rolled in to Bullard next and left with a decisive 74-48 win over the Lady Guard.
The Lady Guard will play at Arp on Monday, Nov. 30 with a 5 p.m. tipoff for the junior varsity game, and the varsity set to start at 6 p.m.
Brook Hill 38, Union Grove 35
After not scoring a point in the opening quarter of play, the Lady Guard warmed up behind six-points from Erica Eden and Michelle Stevenson to take a 21-13 lead at the half.
The scoring slowed in the second half as Erica Eden added on eight points to finish the game with a game-high, 14 points, while Stevenson added a three-points to tally out with nine points to pace Brook Hill.
Cierra Grubbs scored in every quarter for Union Grove to lead with 11 points, while Breanne Hagler added eight points in the loss.
Cushing 74, Brook Hill 48
The Lady Guard ran in to a buzz-saw losing decisively to Cushing as all nine players scored for the winning crew.
Cushing (2-0), came out after a 27-25, halftime lead and exploded for 47 points in the second half while the Lady Guard cooled off to only 23 points for the difference maker in the game.
Brittany Davis led with a game-high 28 points for the only Cushing player in double-figures.
Brook Hill (1-1), was led in scoring by Erica Eden with nine of her 16 points in the final half of play. Mary Caroline Selden was the only other Brook Hill player in double-figures with 13 points.
