The first time I heard that Bullard High School was going to have a drill team I thought to myself, wow, what a joke. Who is actually going to be on that? They are going to be horrible – at least that’s what I thought until my parents talked me into it.

I used to take dance when I was little so they thought it would be good for me. Once they finally convinced me, I really started to think about how my attitude and everyone else’s could have an impact on the team. If everyone was prepared to see us fail then why not prove them wrong? Why not try to bring a little of the spirit and pride back to our school? And that is one of our biggest goals.

The first game was probably our most anxious and chaotic moment yet. We had no idea what to expect and it really doesn’t help when you have so many emotions running through you at one time. You worry about who is watching, what if you mess up, and are people going to like us or hate us?

That night was more embarrassing than anything for me because I slipped twice during the middle of our performance. At least it wasn’t a home game – then everyone would be talking about it.

There are those days that we get tired and just want to give up. But what team or organization doesn’t have those? We also have the ones where we are really excited and can’t wait to improve or learn something new. Personally, my favorite part about the drill team is having another family. Having 14 people I know who will help me and each other whenever we get down or feel like we can’t anymore and want to give up, is the greatest feeling in the world.

I know sometimes we feel like we are not important and that our team doesn’t need us, but just remember, “A person’s a person no matter how small.” Every one of those girls has helped me in some way and I’m sure they don’t even know it.

I’m really glad my parents persuaded me to join because I’ve been on one of the best adventures of my life so far. I’m also really glad we have a wonderful, talented teacher. I think without her we would not be this good. From the bottom of my heart, thank you girls and Mrs. Shelly Johnston for everything you have done for me and our team. I hope we continue to have a fantastic year together.
