The city of Bullard is looking for someone who doesn't mind spending an evening a month taking care of the property needs of their neighbors.

There is an opening on the Planning and Zoning Commission. The woman or man who is interested in the position must live within the city limits.

The position is not an elected one - rather an appointment by the city council. There is no pay other than the appreciation and respect of others, including neighbors and city officials.

Bullard provides such a variety of goods and services for people who live here - everything from alterations to veterinary needs. Groceries, household goods, doughnuts, movies, prescription drugs, snacks and everything else a family needs can be found right here in Bullard. Financial services and legal or property needs can be cared for here, and Bullard residents do not need to go far for tractors, mowers, farm supplies and hardware - it's all right here. Hungry? Within five minutes, there are a variety of restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And there are several businesses to help keep Bullard citizens beautiful and fit.

Some things may be purchased cheaper in other nearby communities and towns, but the price of gasoline preempts most savings, which are minor at best. So, consider shopping in Bullard. In these tough economic times, everyone here benefits from doing so.

I couldn't help but notice how quickly the Bullard Volunteer Fire Department responds to emergency calls. Let them know how much you appreciate their hard work. They are, after all, volunteers who give their time and energy to help us.

When you get a chance, stop by the fire department of South Houston Street in Bullard. While you're there, ask about ways to help the volunteers and the department.

At the August Bullard City Council meeting, Bullard Police Chief Gary Lewis said his department rooted out a group of people bent on manufacturing and selling illegal drugs, such as methamphetamine (meth), to potential buyers in Bullard, including our youth.

Lewis and his staff worked hard to gather evidence of the illegal activity and incarcerate the people involved. That is not an easy task, but is does send a message that Bullard citizens do not want that kind of activity in this city. As citizens, we can help Lewis and his officers by reporting any suspicious activity (vehicles coming and going at all hours, unusual odors, etc.).

Use of illegal drugs, especially meth in all of its forms, does not just ruin the life of the user. It can and often does also ruin the family of users, and it can even adversely affect the community in many ways.

Education is the key to keep younger people from getting involved in using meth and other illegal drugs in the first place. Parents are the first line of defense for our youth, and educators also help.

With everyone doing a part, Bullard citizens can help keep illegal drug activity to a minimum.
