JACOB POWELL At right- Texas State graduate, and former New Caney all district quarterback, for Coach Jim Taylor, Joe Brannen and Shane Nobles. Powell will be working with receivers and the JV program. BULLARD - It was not too long ago that Bullard coaches, Jim Taylor, Joe Brannen and Shane Nobles were in the same huddle with Jacob Powell. The big difference was, Powell was the quarterback for the playoff bound, New Caney, and the three coaches were telling Powell the calls to make.

Now, Powell embarks on a new career in coaching, and what a better place to start than with coaches you are familiar with, in a system you have been a part of before.

"I played for three years under Coach Taylor, Coach Brannen and Coach Nobles," said Powell, "And that's going to help a lot. They already know me, I already know them, and we are dong a lot of the stuff we did at New Caney.

"I will be coaching the receivers and knowing already what their responsibilities are will make it a good transition for the staff and the players too."

While at New Caney, Powell was a standout on the gridiron as well as basketball and baseball.

After his playing days at New Caney, he signed on to play football at Texas State University in San Marcos. After one year of red-shirting at the Texas school, Powell transferred to play at a junior college in Minnesota. After two years up north, and a knee injury, Powell returned to Texas State to finish his degree in communications.

"Jacob will certainly be a great asset to our program," said head coach Jim Taylor. "A few of us coached him in high school and we know the type of character, he is an enthusiastic, upbeat younger coach that will bring some intensity with him.

"We also know that he knows the game very well, and he was like having a coach on the field when he played for us," Taylor added, "and we still do some things we did at New Caney that he is well versed in, but he has always been a very hard worker and willing to put in the time to make the team better in whatever way he can."

Other coaching responsibilities for Powell will include junior varsity football and varsity and JV track.

In the classroom, Powell will start up a new program called BCIS (Business Communications Information Systems), and keyboarding.

Adding in about Powell, coach Shane Nobles said, "it will be a lot of fun working with Jacob," said his former position coach at New Caney. "Jacob will bring a lot of intensity to the young players that we have, and he is was an extremely smart player on the field.

"When he played he was not always the fastest, or had the big arm, but with his work ethic, made him a great player," Nobles continued. "I have seen many times where that kid that had to work harder on the field and off the field, really becomes a great coach because they know what extra work it takes to be successful."

Nobles concluded, "He proved his football knowledge the first day out."
