Smith County officials are making preparations for a series of events to celebrate National County Government Week, May 3 - 9. This year's theme, "Greening Our Future," is the inspiration for the first event of the week, a volunteer "Clean the Square Day" at T.B. Butler Fountain Plaza on Sunday, May 3. About 100 county employed volunteers and community services laborers have teamed up to plant flowers, paint and pick up the downtown Square.

"County Government week is a time for us to reach out to the community and to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of the County. It is also a time when we try to recognize our County employees and let them know how much their work is appreciated," County Judge Joel Baker said.

On Monday, May 4, Commissioners plan to recognize the Smith County Employee of the Year.

"This year, we are looking forward to presenting the award to an employee that not only does an outstanding job for the County but also actively promotes "green" practices at work," Commissioner JoAnn Hampton said.

All Smith County employees are invited to an Employee Appreciation Lunch on the Square on Wednesday afternoon, where hotdogs and drinks will be served by County Elected Officials.

"We realize that a good County Government depends on the success and happiness of each and every employee, and we appreciate everyone's hard work, in every department," Judge Baker said.

Special events and activities are planned for every day of County Government Week. Wednesday, May 6:

• 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Lunch will be provided for all Smith County Employees on the Square as elected officials and department heads do the serving.
