Brook Hill Guard banner year halted by Prince of Peace Eagles
The Brook Hill Guard (in blue ) backline fights off pressure from Prince of Peace with a clear out in the TAPPS Division III State semifinals in San Antonio last Friday. Brook Hill's dream season ended with a 5-0 loss to the eventual state champions from Carrollton. SAN ANTONIO - The banner soccer season for Brook Hill soccer came to a halt in the TAPPS state semifinals, as The Guard lost to Carrollton-Prince of Peace, 5-0, on Friday morning at Frank Mata Memorial Stadium, at the Edgewood ISD Soccer complex.
Brook Hill (9-6-2), had a tough time playing with the tough man-on match ups, and struggled though out the contest, but the Brook Hill intensity never wavered. "I'm still so proud of our team and all they learned and achieved this season as a team," said The Guard head coach David Collins. "Prince of Peace was very well coached, and they have built a tradition that we can hopefully immolate in years to come.
"I can't say enough about how proud I am of this team though, and what they accomplished this season," said the head mentor, Collins. "We had a great season, and this loss today doesn't by any way take away from what we have done this season. "The team came such a long way over the course of the season, and this group has set a standard for future Guard soccer teams," Collins added.
The Eagles took a bit to get the scoring started but once it started, the Eagles never let up jumping to a 4-0, halftime cushion. Just ten-minutes in the Eagles scored as Josh Koape crossed with a pass to Sven Stray-Gunderson who settled the ball before busting the back of the net for the 1-0, lead.
Brook Hill came back with their best scoring effort on the day as Kyle Taylor made a steal and took the ball the length of the field, before crossing a pass to Gordon Chang. Chang settled the pass, dribbled by one defender but was denied the goal on the goal line by the Eagle goalkeeper. The Eagles built on to the 4-0 halftime lead with goals as Ashton Zitterkoft slipped a pass to Kyle Longitt on the backside for the score in the 26th minute. Another Eagle goal at the 31st minute by Josh Koape was assisted by his younger brother, Jordan for a 3-0 cushion.
Just before intermission, Flint Culp scored unassisted as he chipped the ball over a leaping Guard goalie for the 4-0 advantage. Still playing with all the heart of champions, Brook Hill kept up the pressure and left everything they had on the field.
The Eagles however tacked on one more goal in the second half of play by Hayden Weir as his toepunch netted the final point of the game at 5-0. Peace pulled out and played ball-control to stave off any Brook Hill offensive in the final half of play. Prince of Peace ended the year outscoring their final three opponents 15-1. Leading the way for The Guard on the season were Gordon Chang (13 goals, five assists), freshman, Slayton Heirholzer (eight goals, five assists), and Jason White with 10 goals and seven assists from the frontline. Preston Swink will be among the post-season award winners with his stalw art effort in goal all season long. Swink finished out the game against Prince of Peace with eight saves, and a second half for the highlight reels, making three diving stops to hold the Eagles scoring at bay. Swink was credited with four shutouts on the season. Congratulations Guard on a great season and school history with the first-ever trip to the TAPPS state soccer tournament.
