Guard takes No. 2 team out
The Brook Hill Guard has now written their own version of the Canterbury Tales.
DeSoto-Canterbury to be more specific.
Brook Hill shot out to a 24-14 lead, and found it to be the biggest lead of the night as second-ranked, DeSoto- Canterbury gave the sixth-ranked Guard all they could handle in a 68-61, win on Tuesday afternoon at Herrington Gymnasium.
Four Brook Hill players hit for double digits, led by Jeremey Chappelle (18), Collin Hanks (16), Mason Spradlin (15), and Coutrney Thomas with 10 points and a duplicate in rebounds for a doubledouble.
Canterbury inspired a Wally Dawkins team invitation during his halftime speech on adjusting for the second half as a Canterbury run made it a 31-30, Brook Hill leading at the intermission.
The Guard managed to stay one pass ahead, and a three-point cushion for most of the final two period s until Canterbury took the lead by one-point with three-minutes left. made it step up time for The Guard.
"Canterbury has got a really good team and I jumped at the chance to get our guys in as many games as the schedule permits," said head coach Wally Dawkins. "And the chance to lay the caliber of a 23-2 team coming in was some added incentive for us as coaches and the kid's.
"I was really proud of the intensity that we played with, and it was nice to see the scoring so well distributed and everybody that played, whether they scored or not made contributions that gave us this win.
"Hopefully the guys can build on this and see what we have ahead of us when it gets to be playoff time."
The Guard will test their undefeated TAPPS District 4-3A record on Thursday as they entertain Dallas- Lakehill, and then trek to Dallas to lay Canyon Creek on Saturday.
