Board, firm seek community input When longtime Bullard superintendent Jim Wright announced his retirement, the board wasted no time in beginning the search for his replacement. As of presstime, the board has held three meetings - including one to hire a consulting firm - to keep on their schedule - hiring a new superintendent by mid-June. On Tuesday, the board, along with the consulting firm of Horn, Smith, Wood and Preston - were to hold one of the first open sessions where the public was invited to give input on what the district needs in a new leader. "It's important the community be involved in the process, too," James Preston said. But in last week's meeting, logistics were discussed and the board asked both Jenny and James Preston questions about how the candidate process would be culled. "We were so excited when we heard you had selected us," Jenny said. The board chose the firm over two other candidates. "We've already posted on school search sites and received more than 19 requests for applications - some out of state - one as far away as Alaska," she said. "So I want all of you to know that your presence is out there, and your reputation is good." But her husband and colleague James said it's also important that while a timeline be kept, the process not be rushed. "We want a good pool of candidates," he said. The two also said that while they would be weeding out those who wouldn't fit or weren't qualified, "no one is a finalist until you say so." At Tuesday's meeting, the group of community members and school staff will be given two opportunities for input. "They will be provided with a form with 19 characteristics from our experience in developing profiles and from research on what is needed to successfully lead school districts," the two said. Participants are asked to pick the top 10 characteristics. There is a second form with two questions and space for suggestions. Jenny said once the questionnaires are returned, the firm will develop a profile for seeking a new superintendent. "The board will use the observations and suggestions to finalize the profile. This is your opportunity to have a say in and influence the type of superintendent ultimately selected," she said. At the April 8 meeting, the board discussed calendar options, clarified minimum qualifications for potential candidates, discussed salary ranges and identified groups to participate in profile development. As it stands, the board is looking at April 25 as the last day to accept applications. The firm will then present the candidates to the board on May 6 - leaving May 12- 23 to interview them. If all goes as planned, the new superintendent will be announced on June 17 and begin work on July 1. "The role of a superintendent has to be one of the most difficult positions to perform," said board member Sam Smith. "We're very pleased to have the aid of these consultants give us the caliber of superintendent we need in the absence of Jim. "Jim was asked to come out of retirement at a time when the Bullard ISD needed significant help and guidance. It can not be understated the impact that Jim has made on this school district. I can promise you that he leaves BISD in an excellent position for the future. "Bullard has now become a district that others want to move to, and Jim Wright has been very much responsible for this success." |
