Shelter offers low cost sterilization program "Don't be a litter bug" takes on a new meaning as the Klein Animal Shelter and Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP) join forces to offer the first low-cost pet sterilization service in Cherokee County. According to Angela Wallace, executive director, a shuttle service will transport animals from the Klein Animal Shelter in Jacksonville to the KCAAP clinic in Crandall at 5 p.m. the first and second Thursday of each month. The animals will be returned to Klein Animal Shelter Friday afternoon for discharge to their owners around 6:30 pm. Pet owners wishing to schedule a pickup and surgery for their animal(s) should contact the Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project at 972-472-3500. The shuttle van can accommodate up to 50 animals of various sizes. "We are so excited to bring this low-cost service to an area in such need. "And we are so pleased to be working with such a dedicated group as the Richard D. Klein Animal Shelter," Hill said. Costs for the program are determined by weight, sex and species of the animal. Cost for dogs are: males less than 45 pounds, $42; males 45.1 pounds - 70 pounds, $52, greater than 70.1 pounds, $55; female dogs to 45 pounds, $47; 45.1 pounds to 70 pounds, $52; 70.1 pounds to 100 pounds, $57 and females over 100.1 pounds, $65. Costs for cats are males $25 and females $35. Because Texas law requires current rabies vaccination, if proof cannot be provided at the time of surgery, the animals must be vaccinated at a cost of $6. All surgeries are by appointment only. The program also provides complete vaccinations, heartworm tests, heartworm preventive and flea preventive at reduced rates. Funds are available to help those on government assistance, those who own multiple pets, caretakers of feral cats and those who own dogs weighing more than 40 pounds or puppies who will mature to more than 40 pounds. The Klein Shelter is seeking local businesses and private citizens willing to sponsor the monthly shuttle service. A one-trip sponsorship is $100 and funds for gas and vehicle maintenance for one day's transfer. Sponsors will receive recognition in press releases. KCAAP is a non-profit, 501(c)3 volunteer organization that has provided low-cost pet sterilization surgeries and vaccinations, as well as free surgeries for the pets of disadvantaged county residents in Texas, for almost three years, performing more than 12,000 surgeries. Partnering with the Klein Animal Shelter, a non-profit, 501(c)3 animal rescue and adoption organization, KCAAP hopes to expand their services to surrounding counties in order to fulfill their mission of ending the needless death and suffering of all companion animals.
