Panthers take second place at Great East Texas Shootout
Photo by Doc Smith Junior Post Brandon Beavers goes up strong for two point in 12 point win over Rusk on Friday night. BROWNSBORO - The Bullard Panthers brought home the second-place trophy this past weekend from the Great East Texas Shootout, held at four different gyms on the BISD campuses.
Thursday produced wins over Rains (90-56), and Grace Community (57-53), and on Friday the Panthers took down Rusk 67-55, behind 21 points from Josiah Rosebury.
The Panthers earned the championship berth with a thrilling, 59-56, overtime win over Crandall as Lance Anding led the way with 22 points.
The championship game was a tough go for the Panthers as turnovers and steals from Pleasant Grove played out to a 71-43, loss in the title game.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Pleasant Grove 71, Bullard 43
The first half was a backand forth affair in the first half as Pleasant Grove took a 26-22, lead in at intermission.
The second half was a different story however as Pleasant Grove turned up the defensive pressure, holding the Panthers to only four points in the third period as The Grove put up 26 points, for a commanding 52-26 lead.
Sydney Lawson finally made a lay-up for Bullard with 5:03 on the third quarter clock.
Damien Watts led Pleasant Grove scorers with 18 points. Daniel Howard led Bullard with 16 points, and Anding was right behind with 15 points.
Bullard (9-5), made too many turnovers and Pleasant Grove made 17 steals to aid in the win.

SEMIFINALS
Bullard 59, Crandall 56 (OT)
Bullard won the first two quarters for a 32-24 halftime lead but Crandall turned the tables to tie the game at 51-51, to force an extra period in the semifinal matchup.
Lance Anding stepped up big time in the extra period to finish the game with a teamhigh 22 points for the only Panther in double-figures for the win.
Crandall made a second half run behind the long-range shooting of Crandall as Michael Johnson nailed four treys, and teammate, Len Dykman added two, 3-pointers for the tie at the end of regulation.

QUARTERFINALS
Bullard 67, Rusk 55
The Eagles gave the Panthers all they could handle until the final three-minutes of the game when Charlie Moore took over for the Panthers.
Leading 57-54, with threeminuts left, Moore made a slashing lay-up and Josiah Rosebury added a freethrow to up the lead to 60-54.
Coming back down defensiely, Rusk drove to the basket only to have Moore block the shot and make the steal as well. The senior post, Moore, then put the game out of reach with another drive to the basket and a 62-54 lead with 1:05 on the clock.
Daniel Howard added a field goal and a freethrow, while Lance Anding made two freethrows with nine-seconds left for his 19th point of the game and the 67-55 final score.
The Panthers had trouble early on containing a shifty Cornelius Lewis driving the lane. Lewis had a team-high 18 points for the Eagles.
Josiah Rosebury led the way for Bullard with a gamehigh, 21 points, while Anding made two, 3-pointers and totaled out with 19 points.

SECOND ROUND Bullard 57, Grace 53
Bullard had a tough time getting going in their second game of the day on Thursday but outlasted Grace Community, 57-53 at the elementary gym.
The Cougars used fullcourt pressure to surprise the Panthers with a 17-10, first quarter lead.
The Panthers stiffened the defense, holding Grace to only seven points in the second quarter. Bullard in the meantime scored 20 points to take a 30-24, lead at the break.
The Cougars held pace with Bullard in the second half, as Erik DeRoo and Kyle Childress kept the Cougars within reach from long distance. DeRoo made two treys, and Childress one, 3-pointer and 11 second half points to keep it close.
Lance Anding buried two 3-pointers in the first half, and finished the game with 15 points to pace the Panthers. Charlie Moore and Josiah Rosebury added 11 and 10 points respectively to add to the winning tally.
