Hopson race most likely going to precinct recount
State Rep. Chuck Hopson, D-Jacksonville, managed a narrow win Tuesday against his Republican challenger, Brian K. Walker.
Hopson captured 49.27 percent of the votes for 26,030 votes overall. Walker received 49.08 percent of the vote and 25,928 ballots. But the election results are expected to be recounted.
With such a narrow loss in a highly Republican district, the Walker campaign is debating if a recount is necessary, campaign manager Zach Vaughn said.
Bryan Walker will have to pay for a recount, which could be expensive depending on how many ballots are counted, Houston County Clerk Bridget Lamb said. Houston is one of four counties where ballots could be recounted.
"He will pay for all the expenses," she said.
Although the Democratic Party is saying that the race is over, Republicans are wondering if a recount is necessary in the highly Republican district. The 91 provisional and overseas ballots could tip the election to Walker.
Rumor had it that the election could go to a runoff since neither candidate received 50 percent of the vote. But the claim was rejected by Secretary of State officials.
The race is important to Republicans because the seats in the house are almost tied at 75 also depending on a house race in north Texas.
