Big 'Dogs bark too loud for freshmen
Bullard freshman, running back, Justin Mizzles rushed for 128-yards and scored a first quarter touchdown but it would not be enough as the Panthers fell to Chapel Hill, 26-8 in the opening game of sub-varsity action at Panther Field on Thursday.
Led by quarterback Blake Rutherford, and Mizzles, led the Panthers freshmen pushing downfield after receiving the opening kickoff, knocking off yardage in big chunks.
The speedy, and hardnosed running of Mizzles capped of the drive with a nineyard run for the early lead at 4:42 on the first quarter clock. Mizzles added a two-point run for the conversion for the 8-0 advantage for the home boys.
Unfortunately for the Panthers is was all the scoring play. It took the Bulldogs one, to narrow the margin but the Panthers still held a lead after one quarter.
After Chapel Hill's, Avery Henderson took the ensuing kickoff, 73-yards to score. Bullard maintained a lead after the Bulldogs point-after try failed, 8-6.
Three touchdown passes from the Bulldogs ran the halftime score to a 26-8, for a Chapel Hill cushion.
The Panthers dug in after the break and put together another drive on three long gainers by Mizzles, moving the ball to the Bulldog ten-yardline.
A pitch out wide left got pitched too much and went to the 34-yardline before a big ol' Chapel Hill lineman smothered the miscue.
From there on, the Panthers showed some pride with two, fourth-an-short defensive stands to regain possession. The huge offensive front for Chapel Hill then just plugged away a few yards at a time as the clock ran out on the Panthers hopes.
Defensively, Tanner Schmidt, Blake Connor, J.T. Moss, Rhett Davis, Dylan Searcy, Connor Gurley and Rutherford made key plays on defense for some major stops in the game.
The freshmen will shoot for their first district win, on the road at Spring Hill on Thursday, at 5 p.m.
