Lady Guard spikers still learning
BROWNSBORO - The Brook Hill School Lady Guard volleyball team had a tough, but learning experience this past weekend, going 1-3-1 in a tournament played at various sites in the Brownsboro district.
"We hadn't really had the chance to play as many games as most of our competition, and we made a lot of mental mistakes, but I was really proud of how hard the girl's played, and never gave up," said Lady Guard, first-year head coach, Victoria Spencer. "Our main goal is to improve each game and get ready for district, and this tournament was a great learning experience for the team."
In pool-play, Brook Hill started off with a two-game sweep over Mildred, 15-10, and 15-13. Erica Eden set the table for the Lady Guard with eight assists, and Mary Caroline Seldon banged out four kills and three aces.
The host team was not so cordial against the Lady Guard in the next game, as Brownsboro won 15=9, 15-12.
Highlights in the match came from Abby Clements with three kills and three blocks, while Eden fed five assists and added three kills.
The final pool-play game came down to a split with Elkhart. Brook Hill won the first game 15-11, but dropped the second game, 12-15, to place third in the pool.
Advancing to the consolation bracket, it did not get much easier for Brook Hill.
After battling Palestine, 25- 23 for a first game win, the LAdy Wildcats came back to take wins of 25-11, and 25-18, to hand the Lady Guard another setback.
Kelsi Norton worked hard for 13 digs and a service ace, Clements added five kills and four blocks, while Eden chimed in with nine assists, five digs, three kills, and a block.
Seldon chipped in with nine digs and two kills, Carly Hood helped out with seven digs and four kills, and Emily Cummings hustled for five digs.
After the loss, Alba- GOlden was next up for BRook Hill, and although all three matches were close, A-G won 25-22, 19-25, and 25-20.
Amy Jo Teague had five digs and three kills, while Eden continued her pin-point passing with 13 assists.
Clements joined in with six kills and one block,Norton scrambled for 10 digs and three kills, Hood added five digs and six kills of her own.
Rounding out the stats in the loss had Seldon with four digs and a kill, while Cummings added four digs.
The Lady Guard will get a true test this next week as they host T.K. Gorman on Tuesday, open district play i Dallas against LAkehill on Thursday, and then play a heated re-match with Grace Community on Friday.
All three games are set with 5 p.m. junior varsity games, and 6 p.m. varsity first serves.
