CARTHAGE - The Lady Panthers volleyball made an impressive showing this past weekend playing in the Carthage Tournament, finishing in a third-place tie with Hallsville after a weekend at the Carthage High School gymnasium.
"I was really proud of the way the girl's played and stuck together and we got some big wins but it was a total team effort," said Lady Panthers head coach, Kala Laningham of the 3-2 tournament record. "We had some girl's hat really stepped up and we got some great support off the bench as well."
Bullard took the first game of pool play with 25-16 and 25- 23 wins over Beckville.
Bullard drew a bye in the second game as Troup was unable to attend the tourney.
The third game of pool play was maybe the most disappointing game of the day said Laningham.
Nacogdoches won by identical 25-17 scores to beat Bullard but Laningham said errors by the girls let themselves down to a degree.
"I know the girls were down on themselves after Nacogdoches beat us but we just had too many unforced and when you can't pass the ball, you are not gonna win games," Laningham continued. "But we get to play Nacogdoches again in before district and it will be interesting to see how far we have come at that point."
Advancing to the championship bracket, Bullard pulled off maybe their biggest upset of the tourney as they upended the host team, Carthage, losing game one 25-13, but storming back with 25-17 and 25- 20 scores.
"Kailee Morris came in off the bench in the Carthage game and just played incredible," Laningham said about one of her eight juniors on the roster. "She really turned the game around and earned a spot to start against Robert E. Lee."
Calli Miller added 12 kills in the Carthage win while Morris added six.
The win pitted the Lady Panthers to play The Lady Red Raiders and the Lady Panthers stepped up and made the 5A powerhouse earn every point. REL took the win, 25-13, and 25-21.
The loss coupled with Hallsville eliminating Carthage from the tournament, claimed the unusual tie scenario for third-place in the event.
When asked about one big step for the Lady Panthers and Laningham was quick to mention, first-year setter, Heather Camp.
"You have to be solid on offense or you are in trouble, and the way Heather (Camp) has stepped up and taken command at setter has been the real difference maker for us thus far."
