Braaten wins at area science fair

Tyler Junior College has announced the winners of its annual District Science Fair for middle school students held on Feb. 27.

Participants in grades 6 through 8 competed in either biology or physical science categories.

"We had 113 middle school students participating from seven area schools," said TJC biology lab specialist and science fair chairperson Paula Bartley.

Participating middle schools were: Moore Middle School, Bullard and Waskom middle schools, All Saints Episcopal, Maude Laird Middle School in Kilgore, Holloway Middle School in Whitehouse, and Lindale Junior High.

Science fair projects were judged by Tyler Junior College faculty and staff.

Winners, their schools and project titles are:

Sixth-grade Physical Science

1st Place: Jeffrey Yeager, Holloway MS, "In Honor of the King"

2nd Place: Harnaina Bains, Moore MS, "Interactions of Oil and Water"

3rd Place: Laura Brown, Moore MS, "Fruit Mummification"

Seventh-grade Physical Science

1st Place: Aaron Gilmore, Lindale JH, "Which Oil Saves Gas?"

2nd Place: Kayla Hutchison, Lindale JH, "Waves of Sound"

3rd Place: Sean Koch, Moore MS, "What's the Water: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly:

Eighth-grade Physical Science

1st Place: Andrew Latta, All Saints Episcopal, "The Effects of Aggregate on Concrete"

3rd Place: Brad Robertson, All Saints Episcopal, "Get a Kick Out of This"
