Library gets new collection
The Bullard Community Library announces the acquisition of a new collection of 70 art books given by the Art Resources Transfer.
This nonprofit corporation
distributes free books and other materials to libraries across the nation.
"The library requested selection assistance from Bullard area artists Carole Beasley, Martha Tyler and Katy Smith due to the enormous number of books available," said Library Director Debbie Brown, "and because of these artists' greater knowledge of art media and art appreciation.
Their combined input, along with a few other interesting choices, resulted in quite a diverse group of books."
The collection includes books about many media, including painting, photography, weaving, sculpture, theater arts, folk arts, design, digital
design, and others.
The national and international
collection features artists from the United States, Paris, Africa, Britain, Spain, Japan, Nicaragua, Holland, Mexico, Cuba, and other countries.
An unusual volume is "Drawings into Film, Director's Drawings." Tim Burton's drawings for "Beetle Juice" and "Edward Scissorhands" clearly illustrate how the startling images we see on the screen are born.
Movie fans, as well as art lovers, will enjoy this book.
The work of Barbara Hepworth, a 20th century British sculptor, is featured in "Barbara Hepworth, Sculptures from the Estate."
The stark simplicity of her designs in wood, bronze, stone, and marble demand that the reader turn the pages very slowly.
The images dwell in the eyes long after the book is closed.
"Glamour" traces the alluring yet elusive concept of glamour in contemporary style. This volume traces glamour's trajectory from Hollywood's golden age to its present-day connotations of affluence, presenting a striking array of postwar couture, jewelry, automobiles, furniture and built and unbuilt architecture.
Some of the books, such as "Front Pockets" are quite whimsical, while others touch on serious social topics, such as Gordon Parks' treatment of race in his "Midway: Portrait of a Daytona Beach Neighborhood, a compelling group of black & white photos from 1943.
This sampling of titles illustrates the diversity and appeal of this collection.
There is something for everyone interested in art in all its forms.
This collection is in the process of being catalogued and prepared for shelving.
