Library readies for kids' week

On Saturday, Nov., 17 Dru Woods, professional storyteller and puppeteer, will present an hourlong program at the Bullard Community Library to celebrate Children's Book Week.

The free program begins at 10 a.m. and is open to all ages.

Refreshments will be served.

Woods, of Holly Lake Ranch, presents programs throughout East Texas.

She incorporates music and puppets into her presentations to create a magical experience for the listeners, young and old.

"Dru Woods truly brings stories to life," said one third grade teacher. "The different voices and actions she uses captured my students' attention."

"Rise Up Reading," the theme of this year's Children's Book Week, highlights the fun and importance of reading for every child, said Library Director Debbie Brown, who has ordered some new holiday books, as well as other titles.

"We have several new fun titles about Thanksgiving and Christmas in our holiday section," she said. "Also, I always recommend the award-winning books-the Caldecott picture books and the Newbery books for older children.

"Children's Book Week is a good time to look through the collection and find a title that is just right for your child."

The Caldecott Medal is awarded each year to the most distinguished American picture book. These books are in a special section at the library.

The Newbery Medal is given each year for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

One young reader at the Bullard Community Library always goes directly to the shelves of Newbery books to choose his week's reading.

"He's found out that those are the kind of books he likes to read," his mother explains.

Children's Book Week extends the entire week of Nov. 12-17.
