LITERARY LINEUP
Brook Hill holds annual reading celebration

Brook Hill believes the study of literature builds a solid foundation. But administrators and educators also know that hands-on activities drive the point home.

Last week, the Lower School culminated a week of learning activities dubbed, "I Just Read a Good Book" week, with a parade to illustrate what students learned.

Principal Bill Seronello said during the week students listen to storytellers, pick out a

a book to read as a class, study its structure, character development and the elements that make reading enjoyable.

"We end the week with a celebration - a parade," Seronello said.

The students on Wednesday dressed in characters of the book each class studied that week and the parents pitch in to build a float for the parade.

The only rule, he said, is that it must fit on a red wagon.

The parade route begins on the upper school campus.

"The students, in costume, pulling their float, march around the Middle/Upper school Quadrangle (informally called "the Quad") to the beat of the Drum Line," Seronello said.

Middle/Upper school students, released early from their classes, cheer their younger counterparts."

Parents and grandparents joined them in celebrating literature.

This parade is one of the many inaugural traditions established in its first year (2005) and continues into its third year this school year.
