LETTER TO THE EDITOR
A call to Lakeway Harbor residents

If you are pleased with the direction Lakeway Harbor is going, read no further.

However if you are not, please take the time to get involved and speak up.

We currently have a board of directors that can't seem to do things according to our bylaws, which are based on Robert's Rules of Order.

Our by-laws state that a board member should have a working knowledge of them and abide by them.

They seem to have a problem reading and understanding how they apply to the conduct of association business.

They recently called a special membership meeting stating that there were changes needed to be made to our bylaws and other important matters.

The only problem with this, the by-laws state that there has to be a notice containing all the business to be voted on, along with a ballot so that all the members have a say, not just the ones in attendance.

When the meeting began, the agenda called for discussion of our roads, and then the swimming pool, these items were not included in the call to the meeting and should not have been discussed.

Our president thinks that he can dictate to the board and the membership his wishes and desires.

At the called meeting, during discussion of the road portion, one couple had some questions and our president told them either to shut up or leave.

I know he must have felt great after that because they got up and left.

I have been approached by several people who felt intimidated by the manner that meeting was conducted.

As a result of the meeting we know have a $60,000 asset (our swimming pool) full of dirt and a very inequitable formula for the improvement of our roads.

Now I know we need to have our roads updated so that the school buses and the emergency vehicles can traverse with safety but there needs to be a more equitable plan for the payment (Smith County has refused to give us any help but if we do it they will be the first to increase our taxes).

The plan, that has been proposed, is for a single lot owner to pay $200 per year for an undetermined period of time and for multiple lot owners to pay $200 for their first lot and $100 for each additional lot.

The committee that came up with this plan consisted of four board members, our president; four of the members are multiple property owners.

So the single property owners are left to carry the load for the multiple property owners.

If one lot is obligated to pay $200 then two lots should pay $400 and each additional lot should be $200.

This plan, as of writing, has yet to be approved by our board of directors.

We need to get some civility and sanity back in Lakeway Harbor because it is one of the more beautiful places on Lake Palestine and we should treat it with more respect.

We are a community of many retired people that deserve more respect than is being shown by our current board of directors.
