UT Tyler brings in a new honor society for Greek life

To begin recognition of its outstanding student leaders within fraternity and sorority life, The University of Texas at Tyler has brought a national all- Greek honor society on campus, Mindy Sutton, UT Tyler director of student development, announced.

Phi Gamma is the university's chapter of the National Order of Omega which is currently seeking applicants for membership.

Order of Omega is a nationally known all-Greek honor society which recognizes exceptional leadership and academic ablilites within fraternities and sororities and promotes Greek life on college and university campuses.

The National Order of Omega motto is Honoring Greek Leaders Since 1959.

"We're excited about honoring the fraternity men and sorority women who excel both inside and outside of the classroom," said Lamar Bryant, UT Tyler student development specialist. "I encourage and challenge all of the sorority women and fraternity men to resoultion achieve a higher level of academic excellence.

"Academia and scholorship are tenants in which all of our respective organizations were founded on, and it remains a major focal point within the UT Tyler Greek community."

To be considered a member of the Phi Gamma Chapter, students must hold a 3.0 GPA, be a junior or senior in good standing with both their national organization and UT Tyler and be a current, active member of any national Greek lettered organization currently represented at UT Tyler.

Application submission deadline is Monday, Sept. 17. An induction ceremony will be held Monday, Oct. 15.

"The chapter members will have many opportunites to be involved, and students may qualify for scholarships awarded through this national all- Greek honor society," Bryant added.
